How Long?
Sort:
I play online games at the time control of 3 days per move (about 15 games simultaneously). I usually spend up to an hour or 2 on most moves, spread out over a few analysis sessions over a couple of days.
Some moves dont take 2hours
If you take more than a few seconds making moves here you need to get a life.
It completely varies. If the position is complex, and the game is particularly important to me, and I'm not busy doing other things, I'll go to the extent of making written variation trees, analysing through all the key lines I can work out. In these cases I can end up spending at least an hour or two on one move.
I would say I most commonly spend maybe 5 minutes a move though. That's actual thinking time, not time to reply to the move.

I thought we were talking about online chess (formerly called "correspondence" chess). You know, the approach to chess where you think deeply about your moves with the goal of improving your chess skills and playing good moves. It's not for everyone -- some prefer the sloppier style of speed chess. I like both slow and fast chess, but for me, playing slow chess is like savoring a fine meal, while playing a lot of blitz is like stuffing myself with popcorn.

When I played OTB , my club had a 36 moves/ 90 min. time-controle. I've got so used to it that on average I make my move in about 2-3 minutes. The openings I played fast and I didn't spend too much time on obvious moves. Of course there were instances when I needed 10-15 mins. This happened when I couldn't find a plan or had to calculate many variations.
Whilst in the mid of forcing exchanges , it will take 2-5 sec. at minimum to decide on a move.
I invented a method to speed up the process : I also think in the opponents time , so I can add a couple of mins. to my move-time.
