Hence why I emphaised most. When I was at primary school, the best english students were girls, the best maths were boys. Its statistics. Just because you (furys_cane) have no experiance of 'womanly woman', so to speak, doesn't mean there aren't any, and doesn't mean you are in the majority either. Remember your experiances of your own life make you biased.

An odd closing remark from someone trying to draw a factual conclusion from examples in their past experience....

Not another one of these :(

Science has shown countless times, to the disappointment of gender equalists, that the differences between the genders are much more complicated than the roles in reproduction.  Literally, the chemicals produced especially those in the brain which control emotions, attitudes, behaviors, ect.

"There are some differences in a male and female brain (the result of different testosterone levels). A clear difference is the size: the male human brain is, on average, larger; however, in females (who generally do not have as high testosterone levels) the corpus callosum is proportionally larger. This means that the effect of testosterone is a greater overall brain volume, but a decreased connection between the hemispheres."  -wiki

There is no such thing as gender equality and it is about time it is recognized.  By no means am I saying men are better than women, or some garbage like that.  We each have our own positives and negatives.  But we are not copies of each other.  The note of women having a better connection between the brain hemispheres is a clear advantage.  Regardless, these differences are not meant to say "Men should only do X and Women should only do Y".  Differences between the genders are based off of averages and with any such evaluation you have certain % which fall above and below the averages.  There is overlap that occurs, which can explain why some men can be more feminine than some women and vice versa.

I bet there are about 1/3 as many as claim to be.

GhostRider75

there  are more than 150.

links between testoterone and competitiveness have been made before. That is not to say women are not and can not be competitive, but, traditionally, males have a beta-male shaped chip on their shoulder. I have also noticed that any time there are more men than women that I know are constantly trying to get better at something; Guitar, Djing, sports, chess etc. There are other little cultural, gender based oddities. For example, I find that most gigs are male heavy but most art galleries are female heavy.

Yes, I know anecdotal evidence is not proof, but I guess maths is probably a more pertinent example; traditionally a male subject that it is still male dominated, despite proof that this is now changing ( http://www.ams.org/ams/press/notices-survey2004.html). Perhaps linking maths to chess is lazy, but in this context I feel that it is more than adequate.

With the old sharply defined gender rules slackening and a new sort of social freedom existing, these conversations will become increasingly arbritrary (we have to account for individuality, i.e. individual tastes, individual personal histories, individual talent,individual perserverance and, most of all, an individual's ability to improve at something that they are not naturally inclined towards .) . This is already shown in the (clumsy) structure that everone's argument has taken;

a general observation made needs immediately to be followed by a qualifying statement, to justify that the person discussing the issue is not a mysoginist pig, followed by being called a sexist pig by someone else.

I prefer this type of mindlessness to the old type.

lets do a count off...

could it be that some women dont advertise their gender in "fear" of the hormonally driven chess geek looking for a hot piece of cyber tail!?  i remember the tournaments i went to years ago, the few girls who were there couldnt get a moments rest cause the boys kept sniffin around trying to get some sweet chesstang...granted that was highschool but the average male mentality on this site isnt much more advanced than that it seems...

It would be an interesting ratio to see, but the OP wants their names.  Why?  Why do you think?  Stalker?

Dexter_Morgan

There are zero females playing at this site.  Every person posting a female pic on their profile are actually straight guys seeking attention or gay guys seeking something else.

oginschile

Darnit Dexter... what a buzzkill.

Narz

I'm waiting for the females in in my chess group to post pics of themselves holding signs saying "Hello Narz's People", only then will I know for sure. Laughing
