could it be that some women dont advertise their gender in "fear" of the hormonally driven chess geek looking for a hot piece of cyber tail!? i remember the tournaments i went to years ago, the few girls who were there couldnt get a moments rest cause the boys kept sniffin around trying to get some sweet chesstang...granted that was highschool but the average male mentality on this site isnt much more advanced than that it seems...

As a female, I have absolutely no problem with the word female! It's simply a word that describes gender, without running into the problems that lady carries-not all females would consider themselves ladies (the tomboyish certainly wouldn't). Female is a biological term that has one concrete meaning, lady is tied with social conventions.
I don't care what gender I play. I treat my opponets equally. No room for mercy in chess.
I'll join the ranks of the few females who are, apparently, males that are only 'posing' as females.
If you want to know why so few girls play chess, it's just just a mere fact of social standards. If society doesn't envision a 'chess player' as being female, then a female probably won't go out of her way to learn how to play chess. Sometimes, it's just a simple fact of the interest being passed down from father to son. That's how it happened in the case of my brother. However, my father never made an effort to teach me as a child, as he did my brother. Therefore, by the time he TRIED to teach me, I wasn't interested because I'd learned the stereotype that chess was boring. I only learned by the result of pure accident last year, when I followed one of my friends to a practice with the chess team.
That, and I also contest with the fact that some women may hide their gender out of fear of unwanted attention. Many of my opponents are perfectly fine, but every once in a while there is the random opponent who obviously is interested in things other than the game.

Well, maybe more women would pay here if guys did'nt say crude things to them. While there are 99% nice people here, it only takes one offensive person to get someone (& it could be male or female) to get turned off playing here. I have a pretty thick skin, so all I do is block people, but others might not want to even possibly subject themselves to possible idiots.
