How many people think that; Chess is just a Total Waste of Time in Life!

Chess is a waste of time...almost all professional chess players are a bunch of beggars for lack of a better word.Few players make a living off playing chess.

i think with todays resources--one can always improve in chess and not hit a plateau except when advancing age catches up with what you learn.

@BronsteinPawn you are just wasting your time...in itself Chess doesn't help you a whole lot with your life .It is an empty kingdom and you are the king...you beat somebody and you think you are a genius but you aren't.

BronsteinPawn don't give up on life. However if you come to think about it, chess is a big waste of time ...I can see you are 1800+ standard. If you get to 1900 or 2000 apart from feeling you are closer to Albert Einstein you achieve nothing more than that.Chess just eats the clock off your life....you way better helping the needy or making friends than doing something that's probably more worthless than you think.

NO! I WONT LEAVE MY DRUG.
Seriously tho, you dont have to be productive in life, you just have to be happy.

I believe you must differentiate between two kinds of chess. Tournament and casual. I would never do tournament chess again as it is too stressful. Casual online, park, Starbucks chess is for fun and is not a waste of time. Varying your free time activities with other pastimes including volunteer service precludes the idea that "chess is a waste of time".
For old guys like me, I've read that "thinking" activities helps to delay dementia/Alzheimers. I don't like crossword puzzles but I do like chess and scrabble. My 95 year old mother prefers the "find the word and circle it" puzzles and card games. So casual chess in moderation has its purpose.

its a waste of your time when you should be doing other important things.. work, time with friends and family. physical exercise other hobbies. being well rounded person in life is the key to a happy life for most.. as in chess.. being a well rounded player is the goal right? im sure everyone here plays a bit too much. fischer says chess is life.
