How Much Do You Obsess About Your Rating?

I just submitted an article in my blog titled "Don't Worry About Your Rating".  Of course, this is easier said than done, so my question today to you is
"How often do you obsess about your chess rating"?

EternalChess

Alot.. i obsessed over my win/lost/draw even more.

I am going to trying to play higher rated players then me rather then lower/same rated players

TheGrobe

I don't obsess about my rating -- I obsess about winning each and every game I play.  My rating is just an indicator of how well I'm actually accomplishing that goal.

zankfrappa

That's a good mental attitude, it's difficult for a lot of people to think that way.

it's an accasion to congratule myself

What's rating? Wink

Dozy

Obsess?  Me?  Never!

Well, hardly ever...

My problem is that my daughter, who introduced me to chess.com two years ago (when it was still a wee small thing, still wrapped in it's swaddling clothes), now has a slightly higher rating than mine.  She's fond of pointing out, in the nicest possible way of course, that her slightly higher rating makes her slightly smarter than me.

I need to get my rating back above hers so that I can re-assert my right to be Patriarch of the Dozy clan and, to that end, I've been sticking pins in voodoo dolls of my opponents.

But obsess?  Never.  The fact that I've ground my teeth down to stubs has nothing to do with it.

Not at all, actually. I do keep an eye on it and I have goals for it, but I know that it is simply a reflection of my true ability. It's the ability that I want to improve, not the number. There have been times my rating creeped up 100 points higher than I knew I could sustain, and it was fun, but I knew it wouldn't last.  Same for when I had a bad run and it went pretty low.

I am sure my rating will go down (and hopefully)  back up--I enjoy playing the games and learning from them. I also use the site to practice and learn my openings. I am more concerned about the quality of my games than the number associated after my name.

100%.  The only time I (admittedly) stress about my rating, is when I have reached a high, and need ONE more win to surpass all previous efforts.  Ever since I passed the 2000 mark (online), I really, really would like to hit 2100.  The problem is, that sometimes I'm concentrating too much on that goal alone, instead of trying to win whatever game I am currently playing.  It happens.  We have to deal with that.  However, the more we can control it, the better we can become, in theory.  Cool

I tell myself (and everybody else)  it doesn't matter. But I hate dropping under 1600, like the past week or so.

I almost never look at my rating. In fact, up until last week I did not know what a rating was, nor that I had one. :) If I obsess about anything it is the fact that I am not very good at chess and I am not fond of the fact that everybody can see every game that I have played, thus every game that I have LOST. I have to say that peeves me a bit, though I try to ignore the immensely annoying fact that everyone can see what a nooby I am... At this I hang my head in shame and somewhat obsess about finding a way to keep others from seeing this, but so far the only way I know of is to win, and so I create more games, only to lose and be even more regrettably shamed... But obsess is a strong word for staying up till 2 in the morning with bloodshot eyes and aching fingertips, staring at the computer like a madman staring at a bomb, think that what my eyes behold is at once the most beautiful and horrible thing that I must find a way to get, to hold, to cradle in my arms like a baby, to raise, protect, perfect and use. But obsess? No, way! Yell

Rating means a lot, to play in group A (in Norway) you need 1500+ and in some you need 1750+

To qualify for the higest and most fun groups in the national, you need 2000+, the elite is 2300+

I would hate losing to much rating and needed to play i group b...

MapleDanish

I've been obsessing about my chess.com Tactics Trainer rating lately... me and a friend have been competing... we're both on the top page now :S

My rating on CRT art means a lot to me, I know my knowledge climbs with it.

(CRT art is a tactical puzzle program)

Your rating is your history, if you are hig ranked you have done a good job!

If you dont care about your rating, you are probably low ranked, and have much to learn!

Rating matters!

-Rating is only a number- yes, but 0-1, 1-0 is only numbers too, I'm sure that evrybody prefer to have the right numbers :)

Little-Ninja

It is important to me but i am not obsessed so much that i forget its the quality of the games and the friendships you build that really matter. And Dozy you are so funny lol

conman1000

Right now I'm kind of obsessed because its on an over 100 points landslide, but once it gets back into the mid 1400's I won't care as much.

I'm too busy obsessing about ratings in general to obsess about my own rating. Although I'm wondering how bad the drop is going to be. I've been creeping up from easy games in the first round of tournaments, but those second round games are finally starting up ...
