Is improvisation studying??
how much time do you spend per day studying/playing chess?

I simply play for 2-3 hours. I play chess for fun! Whatever knowledge I have in chess comes from watching streams. Although, I have hundreds of chess books, haven't opened them yet. So, on an average, I spend 3-3.5 hours on chess.

nice.

It seems to me that the better players spend less time on chess
Better players only say they "are studying chess" when they are really doing puzzles, analyzing games, etc.
Good question would be do you consider playing blitz stuyding?
I only consider focused pencils, reading, etc studying
And perhaps playing classical

Wow it seems lower rated players do a lot. I was also like that I can play 10 hours a day. Only playing. Because I did not know anything about studying. I did not know what to read from the ocean of chess titles. But I can tell long time control games got me out from beginner level. I might do it again. I played long games with Chessmaster 9 and 10 and other chess computers like Chessgenius, and Mephisto, older Fritz engines. With Fritz 8 adjusting level was not realistic and I played it anyway. Because I did not have internet to play online. No choice.
It's interesting that it seems to you that lower rated players do so much. You'd expect it was the other way around, that the higher the rating the more time was spent on chess.

For advanced players, blitz can be useful to study openings. However, it is only helpful if you take time after each game to analyze it, and work to understand your openings. This is useless for beginners as they need to study nothing but tactics.
Playing blitz without studying is useless for everyone, but a lot of fun!

I spend more time on this site talking to others than actually playing chess lol
There can often be a good reason for that, though. A game requires 30-60mins of quality time. You can make a post in 2mins, even when tired or distracted or travelling or at work etc.

I spend 3x that time!
