How old were you when you started playing chess?

Oh yeah, 21 years old

i remember knowing how the pieces moved when i was about 4 or 5, but the first time ive played a serious full game was on here about 2 days ago...

so if im going off that, then 16 :) im a bit of a noob :)

My brother tought me how to play when I was about seven. However, until a couple of years ago I used to play sporadically...

About 7 years old I think. Played on and off since. Only took it up again this time last year. Wouldn't fancy playing HAL though. Don't think he'd like losing!

When I was about 4. (Now I'm 13)

I was 13 when I started. I'm 16 now.

I was 8 when i first learned and i didnt play again until i was 11 and joined my middle school chess club. That next year i placed 4th at a junior state tournament

It was just over 40 years ago when I was 7. I started playing seriously when I was 21.

Starting to feel old now cos I have heard of HAL! For those who are a lot younger than me HAL (H.A.L 9000) was the now infamous and much maligned onboard computer of the spacesip in 2001: A Space Odesy. Though he was in fact a victim of his own programming. Played a good game of chess too.

I started when I was 28. It was only eight months ago. 

I was 5, I think. I took a couple decades off on account of not having anyone to play against and having many other things to do growing up.  But have really hit it hard in the 2000s.

i just started playing about 6 months ago and somehow i ve got a 1415 rating and i m in a real good position to win the tournament  (number one stunta) im currently playing in. i cant belive it took me so long to discover this game this is by far the greatest game in the world

Not sure exactly.  I started before high school just playing at home for fun.  Then I started playing at high school during my lunch hour and after school against a few other people.  We didn't have a chess club or coach, then when I left high school I stopped.   A little over a year ago I started playing online on this website.  I am 58 now.  Had to start over again learning forks, pins, traps.

I started playing when I was 6 years old. I realize it was a very long time ago. That's so weird. At least, I'm not alone.

I started playing about two months ago when a friend taught me how to play.  I joined chess.com a few weeks ago and have been loving every minute of it, the more I play the more I learn, it's great...
