How to avoid "trap" openings?

In a number of my games I come up against people who develop maybe 2/3 pieces and insist on trying to trick me into losing a lot of material. Admittedly this works on me a lot when my concentration slips but even when I can see it coming in the next 3/4 moves I'm unable to prevent this. Any tips?

You have played 10 games with 3, or more days per move.  Your average move time?

Time/Move: 1 hr

Not to hard to figure out.

How to avoid traps? Practice defending against those that you find yourself struggling against and dont do what your opponent is obviously looking for you to do. Most important of all, make sure you are developing while defending and not leaving pieces hanging. I hope this brief bit of advice is useful to you.

What has been helping me is finally realizing when an opponent offers a trade of anything they usually have a plan, play safe and castle then lash out into the center when you see an opening.
I like watching Backyard Professor on YouTube he's helped with my game psychology. Granted I'm pretty low now but I definitely see my awareness growing

This made me look at my stats, it seems my average time per move was 14minutes. Lol.

I mean no disrespect towards anyone i have played so far, but with a few exceptions, the positions havent required a lot of thought.

I had to look at my stats, too. What's interesting is that I have a move time average of 17 hours according to the computer. But I honestly don't spend more than 45 minutes on any given move. I think one game I played I may have spent 3 hours on a move in the end game.

Perhaps this move time indicator measures your move time from when it becomes your move and not when you log on and access the actual game.

I used to play correspondence, because at first I did not know how to play live  from this site. Got sick of waiting for moves, so I resigned a few games on move 3 when I found out how to play live games

And the only chess i will play here is correspondence.  It doesnt seem to bring out the usual bad behavior faster time controls seems to do.

CWilson: under the Learn menu, find the Chess Mentor. There are lessons like "Defeating Pet Openings" that are specifically designed to deal with those annoying odd openings. I've had the same problem, especially with people attacking with Queens/Knights while I blindly go about my usual "normal" openings.

you should find what you need in Chess Mentor. Good Luck!
