How to defend?
IMO the advance french is easier to play for black at lower levels because black's idea is clear and fast: to pressure white's center. After they advance the pawn to e5, you can often make your next 4 moves:
c5, Nc6, Qb6, cxd
And the next moves after that possibly Ne7-f5 or g5-g4. All of these moves have the same idea, which is to pressure white's d pawn.
I show 3 white variations on move 6. Bd3, 6.Be2, and 6.a3.
I like the french, but in this position:
As black I struggle to find what to do, I started playing the Borg defense because this happened so often.
This even though severely underdeveloped, is very much better than the previous.
In the first position I started playing C5 which they respond with C3, and it gets worse from there after I play F6.
So how to defend?
I have tried taking and on the off chance they decide, Hey! let's take with knight on E5! Which doesn't happen, it doesn't turn out too bad.
Eventually I lose most of my games with this position.
