How to equalize as black against Ruy Lopez?

Almost of my game as black, I played 1...c5 against e4. I rarely play 1...e5, because of 3.Bb5. Any defense like Berlin, Closed Smyslov, Closed Breyer just didn't work on me. The first player always get space and initiative. I've never tried the Marshall though, because it is too wild. So, I'm asking you all, how to play against Ruy Lopez? And how to equalize and win against it? Thank you
