How do I get a screen shot/capture (image/picture file) of a position?

Sort:

I want a *.jpg/*.png image/picture file of a position?

For example:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 (Queen's Indian)

Enter moves and then get an image file (*.jpg/*.png) of a position? Is there a free chess program that can do this? I'd like a brown colored chess board like the one above. Possible to do it online?

Thanks for your help!

Lots of GUIs can do this.

The multi versatile (and free) WinBoard GUI, for example, can create a bmp of the current board position.

Once the position is on the board, select FILE and then SAVE AS DIAGRAM.  If you really need it to be a jpg or a png (instead of a bmp) there are lots of graphic utilites that will convert it for you.

With "Scid vs PC", also free, select TOOLS and then BOARD SCREENSHOT.  This will save it as a png file, once you choose your folder and give it a name.

Of course, if you don't have either of these programs, (and don't wish to download them) Windows 7 (and possibly other versions) comes with a free program called Snipping Tool, that can create screenshots of whatever you have displayed.  It's located in your

C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe

folder.

Screen capture using Scid vs. PC's screen capture utility:

um, an easy thing to do, is using any gui just get the position you want to capture visible on the screen, (make sure everything you want to be in the picture is actually showing, all at once, on the screen) then on your keyboard (they all have this) look for a button that says "prt sc" which is short for "print screen" its usually above the pageup pagedown buttons, anyway- push it, and this copies everything that is visible on the screen to the clipboard. now you can open any image editing program (like paint) and copy the clipboard contents into the program (the keyboard shortcut to do this is *ctrl  v*) from here you can just crop to what you want to be in the final picture and save it. *done*

Caissa.com has a tool for that here http://www.caissa.com/chess-tools/chess-diagram-generator.php

Here, I opened Winboard, made some moves, pressed Alt+PrtScr and pasted into a paint program (it could be cropped if desired). It took me about 30 secs.:

Black looks lost here.

If you use Scid vs PC or WinBoard, it looks like you want to set your board square colors to these RGB values:

light squares: R:239, G:215, B:179
dark squares: R:179, G:134, B:98

I think that is an identical match to the square colors of your original post.

Hi there,

You were talking about Scid and saving a position as an image. The option given by you (select TOOLS and then BOARD SCREENSHOT), is not available in the version I'm using (4.6.4, aug 1 2016). I was wondering if you could tell me how to do it in the current version of Scid. Thanks in advance.

MrEdCollins

I wasn't talking about Scid.  I was talking about Scid vs. PC.

These are two different programs.

The latest version of Scid vs. PC appears tp be version 4.16.

If you can't find how to do it in the help files, I suspect it's not possible with Scid.  If you insist on using Scid, I'd just setup the board position you wanted on screen, and then use an outside screen capture program, like Snipping Tool, which comes with Windows.

Oh, ok, that is very clear to me. I'm going after Scid vs PC. Thanks for your answer.
