If you were to use materials whilst playing it would be deemed has cheating. After a game though is fine.
How to get the most from C C ??
I just started to play C C recently with my only goal being to use it as a "study tool" to improve my live play. My C C rating isn't important to me, I just want to use it as another learning resource as are chess books, videos, ect., Given that this is my only focus, and the fact that you are allowed to use books and data bases during C C games, I was just wondering if for my specific goals it would best to use the books and data bases after the game is done to analyze , or as I play along if I get stuck? I'd appreciate any and all input, H.G.
Sorry but it seems you are not really playing correspondence chess. Maybe you are playing here Online chess. For Correspondence Chess you have to join the ICCF, which is recognized by FIDE, and you can use engines for your moves. That will give you a real rating, like the USCF, because it is recognized worldwide. Here the rating is not real, and not recognized by anyone. Playing in ICCF is also very difficult, because there you have players whose opening database is actually used as example by GMs when playing novelties in real tournaments. So if you really want to learn, that is the real deal, here you will just waste time with people who cannot see two moves ahead.
@Corleone - not so. For CC he can use resources (but not engines of course)
@hiredgun - I like to use the database (I only ever use the openings explorer here) during the game specifically to see when my opponent breaks from the main lines and plays an undocumented move. I assume it's a bad move and try to figure out from there why - sometimes this leads to some insight. I always intend to look up the relevant ideas in a book but never seem to get around to it unless it's a new opening, then I'll skim a chapter or find a video on youtube about it. I mainly use the extra time to explore the position, almost like doing a TT puzzle, looking for interesting ideas.

Extremely Nice to hear from you Don!!! Are you sure about that, I could have sworn that you could use books and data bases during a game, but certainly NOT engines???? If you are right, I'm glad I haven't done any consulting yet. H.G.

Not true.
I like the idea of looking at it as a puzzle Metastable. Sheds a whole new light on it. Really great insight, thanks!!!! H.G.

You're allowed anything static, not anything which gives advise based on the current board position.
