My wife wouldn't appreciate me going out and finding a girlfriend just to teach her chess. If you think that trying to teach a girlfriend chess is hard, try to teach a chess widow how to play. Impossible.

it was an internet game. i think i would also enjoy more watching people who are better than me playing and explaining the moves at the same time
People have different tastes in games and I think one should just leave it at that. You will still find enough chess players to fill up your time! Don't even try convincing your girl friend, if you really love her.
thats ok it seems like she is playing now and starting to enjoy it, she sees alot more things on the chess board than she used to it is great!!!

9 years on I wonder how things turned out for the OP and his missus.
My husband tried to get me to play MTG. I learned but found it incredibly boring. Likewise, I tried to get him into chess. He used to beat me all the time and now I beat him every game so he doesn't want to play anymore. It's whatever. Find other common interests. No problem in having some separate hobbies. I doubt this guy and his girl stuck together.

MTG is magic the gathering aka the best card game ever created. Expensive as hell though.

I avoided this by just buying a few pre-made decks and rolling with those. Customizing some is fun, but spending hundreds of dollars and putting in all that effort to get the perfect deck saps to fun out of it for me.

You can always just find a girlfriend that plays chess. Try hitting on women at your next tournament!
Actually, I did recently teach a girl I had a crush on, and she enjoyed it, but of course things only went so far...
