How to Improve My Opening Strategy?

Hi everyone,

I'm a beginner in chess (around 300 rapid rating) and I'm trying to improve my opening play. Sometimes I feel lost after the first few moves and end up in a bad position early in the game.

I usually play as White and go for the Italian Game, but I’m not sure what to do if my opponent plays something unexpected. Also, as Black, I don’t know which defense to use against or .

Can someone suggest:

A simple opening repertoire for both White and Black?
Any tips to learn and remember opening ideas instead of memorizing moves?
Good videos or books for beginners?
Here’s one of my recent games:

Thanks a lot for reading and helping! 😊

Memorizing openings will do nothing at your level, you need to know basic chess opening principles and need to not hang pieces, while being always on the lookout for attacking your opponent's pieces.

You don't need to learn chess openings. Follow these basic opening principles:
1. Always try to control the center (e4, d4, e5, d5 squares).
2. Develop your minor pieces (bishop, knight) first.
3. Castle fast.
4. Don't move a piece twice in the opening if unnecessary.
5. Don't hang pieces.
