Relax, good luck, eat popcorn! Have fun definitely play to enjoy yourself, focus on playing good chess rather than beating somebody! 😊

You've been playing for a while now so last-minute "cramming" will not do much good. Depend on what you already know, get adequate rest and nutrition, and don't put a lot of pressure on yourself. Chess is not your livelihood, you're going to the tournament because you like to play. Relax and enjoy the experience.

I'm surprised that you recommend that inferior American stuff over a good highland single-malt. Are you really Scots?

I missed that.

I'm an American, and highland single malts are my prefered choice.

Practicing with a chess set, sleep well, take melatonin if necessary, eat well; don’t eat 1 hour before the tournament, bring snacks to have energy during the game or to annoy your opponent by eating mid game, drink 6 bottles of water during a game, don’t play too much the same day as you play, make friends during the tournament

My personal favorites are from Islay: Laphroaig (can't find the 15-year old lately and the 10-year old isn't quite ready) and Lagavulin (unfortunately a fire some years ago has reduced present availability and caused the price to skyrocket).

I haven't had Lagavilun yet, I will soon. It's available here, but very pricy.

What do you think of Dalwhinnie?

I'm sure I tried that years ago when I and some friends sampled a wide variety of scotches, but apparently it didn't impress me as much as the few brands I've favored over the last few decades. Maybe I'll have to sample some more as my top choices are becoming difficult to obtain.

I highly recommend visiting Edinburgh if you're ever in Britain--whisky bars there will have dozens of great choices from distilleries too small to get into the overseas markets.

Thanks. My wife has family in England, we will visit the UK someday.

Good luck! Let us know how you do.

Hey Ryan! I recently had my first OTB tournament in May. I did alright...and won 1st place in the unrated division. Before you play...don't think about chess. You will probably get nervous like I was and if there was one thing that helped it was listening to music and just chilling. Also don't play risky gambits. Stick to a good repertoire of openings with white and black and you will be just fine. If you lose, don't get mad cause it's your first tourney. Enjoy yourself and have fun! Make new friends too. Also, may I ask which tourney you are planning to go to?

Maverick Summer Breeze 1-2-3 in Markham, Ontario. It's a junior otb tournament. It says it's CFC rated.
