How to respond to rudeness

I've just been called the most dreadful things, such as "fag", "bitch", etc, by an opponent who doesn't appreciate me making his inevitable victory difficult.

 Nonplussed, suggestions?

What do you normally do when someone calls you a fag or a bitch? Or is this your first time?

emmett4077

Easy. Just don't respond. I actually disable chat myself.

Evenstaroflight

I would probably tell him to stop it and not call me anything again. If that doesn't work, I would either ignore him or quit the game. Maybe you should report him to chess.com. I think they want you to when someone is using foul language.

Trag55

No, I'm adept at dealing with such stuff face to face. Out of the blue, in a chess game with someone I've never chatted to, left me gobsmacked!

Laughing

I've sometimes won games a Queen down, even at my standard, perhaps as the game itsewlf was interesting I was more flabberghasted.

Well, that's the problem with jerks; they exist.

Report it to chess.com.  Cite or send them the page with the opponents comments.

Trying to see reason with tempermental teenagers or people who forgot to take their meds is pointless just ignore them and desensitize yourself to their remarks if it gets too much disable chat as suggested.

Eventhorizon

Be cynical, but never base or crude. If you have a knowledge of basic psychology (Freud helps), then you will know about the hangups, complexes and frustrations  of 90% of all people and you can play on that like on an instrument. I can humiliate anyone for life with this method.

well, just ignore it like something on the road ;)..or say thanks to irritate them further !

I think the best advice is a combination of the suggestions above: disable chat with this "jerk" (a stronger word applies better) and definitely report it. And then call in Chuck Norris. I took the bait once and responded in kind which was a mistake because it didn't make me feel better except in the short run and it only prolonged the situation.
quequeg

make his inevitable victory even more difficult.  e.g. delay your moves to the maximum time.  If he is insulting you then maybe he is getting wound up and could blunder the game. focus on the game but dont respond in kind to the insults

SuperBlunder

ignoring works quite well; i disabled the chat on someone and they resigned both games they had with me :)

Mostly, they try to block me but for some reason they can't but I get alerts when they try it though.

Report it to chess.com.

His account will be closed.
