How to study to get a 2000+ rating?

Somewhere on this forum I've read that if you can get to 1500 rating without the help of books and such and such, you can get much higher. So I havn't been relying much on books and stuff. My rating is a 1000 I would say.

I want to be at least 1500 rated next year or else maybe chess isn't for me? I like the game, but making progress is important. I started playing chess seriously at the beginning of januari or februari. Mostly online games. I joined a chess club. So far three rapid losses at the club, the last one was my best game at the club, even though I lost.

I'm 25 by the way.

Eh, the point isn't that using books lowers your skill ceiling. The point is if you get good on your own it indicates a high ceiling.

It is better for someone who has the potential to be world champ to use book and other learning tools as soon as possible!

I realize you're trying to get a hint for what your potential is, but this seems like an odd way of doing it.

Hmm. Why not decide that if you enjoy it, and you can still improve, that you will continue to play? What if you like to play, and you improve a little every day, and you're 1500 in 2 years? Is that so bad?

when you play for the first couple years over the board without reading anybooks, youll peak .

step2. finding the books the suit your style of thought , reading these things neverends!! Its a bang your head against the wall , mentally torturing , painstaking process.  the books are gonna get harder and harder.

Step3 . after youve read 50 chessbooks , study the openings  1 AT A TIME , because each is unique and has their own correct move orders of operation.

step4. it becomes clear that in the computer era , chess has become mainly prearranged and memorized lines......

even the books we read are prearranged and memorized in our subconscious.

Hmm, which book would you recommend for someone who hasnt read any chess books?

Today I became 1109 in rapid, very happy about it. Finally 1100 again.

I notice tactics help me.

If I'm 1500 in 2 years I'm afraid that I won't become FM, ever. If I can get to 1850 in 2 years, that would be great.

Keep studying tactics. Pick your repertoire and learn it. Study master games, especially Morphy, Anderssen, etc, the older giants. At your level, studying the games of those guys will help more than more modern masters. I'm sure you've heard it plenty, but your primary concern should be tactics, tactics, tactics. Tactics alone can take you to 1800 with a decent repertoire.

I've seen these two mentioned, looked them up, and they look very good. First one will give you what you need to know about tactics. Second one gives you a little bit of everything, openings, strategy, and endgames (not tactics though).

I'd say 8 to 10 years of work is a fair estimate of when you're close to your peak. If you make 1800 in 2 years, you might be FM in 5 or 6... but if you're not 1800 in 2 years, you still have time happy.png

(also if someone reading this has been playing for 10 years and you're sad to read this, notice I said 10 years of work, not play!)

At 25 you  have plenty of time to get to a rating of 2000.  However, the closer you get to 2000 rating, the  more  you will  change your  perspective about how  to play  this game.  In fact you will have to change your perspective in 3 ways.

If you would like to know more please let me know.  Thx.

Modern Chess Openings is a great book to learn from, and presents many choices.

Practical Middlegame Techniques, by Danny Kopec, is also worth checking out. It focuses on position, and tactics.

you dont progress maybe becouse you play a lot blitz, for improving is neccesary to think, in blitz you dont think a lot you only ruin you game im saying this by experience i started to play chess like 2 years ago and reach the 1900 but after that nothing, why becouse i stop playing standard chess and only played blitz, now im doing the things right, only standard and study and even if im playing blitz really bad( i currently have 1742 on blitz) i know my chess is better now, try to do that and find a good coach
