How you guys keep yourself Motivated?

I have been on a break from studying chess due to personal reasons and this made me realize that the most important component for improvement in chess is motivation! With much being written about individual moves, combinations, tricks, positional details, training techniques – I rarely see a discussion of how does one become interested in chess, and then keep the passion alive. What drives players, both amateurs and professionals, to play and improve their game?
Do some people get immersed in the game without a strong desire to improve, merely fascinated by its aesthetics?
Do others only focus on the competitive side of the game, without the reflective look at the beauty of some moves?
Perhaps for some - the immersion to the game - is a way of escaping into a different world?

For me it is an amalgamation of two drives.

One is the macho, testosterone fuelled thrill of hunting down the enemy king in a ruthless combat.

The other is the expression of divine perfection in an endeavour which demands those skills of head and heart that make us uniquely human.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women...

Oh, of course. That's why you are supposed to behave with good sportsmanship.

Original Road Runner or Bugs Bunny vs. Daffy is a pretty good source of butt kickin' inspiration.

That would be a mistaken assumption.

Lately I have set myself a goal to play at least a 30 minute game every day and study for a bit(you know some puzzles an endgame here and there :D). This seems to keep my interest alive so far. Laughing

Chess is a Bitch Goddess. Once She bites you on the neck, drawing blood...you are sucked in, forevermore. Such is your motivation.

You'll go about with a blank look on your face babbling to everyone: "All I ever want to do is play chess."

Motivation?? Chess players??Im not a chess player I am an artist, listening to the siren call of the muses. My chess board is the Canvas where I show the world the beauty and elegance of my Craft. The Chess pieces are the paint brushes and colors that bring the imagine's alive. You will never truly understand what motivation towards chess is, becuase in short motivation is passion. Passion to show the world your Craft and if you don't realize that by now with a ranking of 1300 you never will my friend I am sorry.

My motivation is to always improve my game and to keep my mind active. As one gets older keeping your brain engaged with abstract thought processes is important. So I guess for my it's just a way of exercising the mind.
