I am considering deleting my account on Chess.com

Hi All,

I am extremely frustrated with this site. Today I lost my internet connection for just 30 seconds and my game was marked abandoned and lost!!

I have raised this with the help and support team by sharing all the details and now i wait for their response.

If no rating is given back then i see no reason to continue here. I am a regular member since 2012.

This is not the first time this has happened and I don't see why should anyone in my situation should continue here. Lichess.org is a better site anyways.

David

They can’t change the result of the game. Would you take the rating points off your opponent? You attach too much value to your rating - the effect of any one win or loss gets washed out very quickly.

Maybe worth checking a few things to see if this helps

"Muh Lichess."

This post is dumb.  If you want to leave, then leave.  Otherwise stop whining.  Plenty of us have had good games marked as a loss because of a technical issue.  Get over it and keep playing.  Or don't, but stop griping.

This sounds like an overreaction. In your 9500 matches there will have been many incidences where you gained rating because your opponent abandoned due to lost connection.

But that's different. They're not me. I am me I am special.

He's going to cancel his free membership. Please understand the severity of the situation.

^^^ Furthermore, the corrupt site subtracted a number from another meaningless number that has no relevance to the real world and won't give it back. I can't believe people can't comprehend gravity of the situation.

To HighestUnrated,

Your frustration is understandable, and it goes to the heart of ratings--what do they mean and why do we have them? None of the answers addressed your question about the reason games are rated when unmeasured externalities (a phrase from economics--Wikipedia explains it) derail the validity of rating--that it measures achievement in playing.  I don't know what programming can remove local disconnections--it's a way internet providers manage busy bandwidths.  Possibly changing ratings to reflect only best performance (no negative points)?

To the rest of you who answered without trying to help:  stop putting other people down to put yourself ahead.  The internet is toxic enough.  Instead, let's all agree to enjoy chess.com playing and visiting with other chessplayers.  If you don't have something helpful to say, just don't say anything.

I think chess.com staff is having an annual meeting or something, and thus cannot respond to emails currently

Thank you, B1ZMARK.  Looks like progress.

#10: When a server stops receiving communication from a client there is no way for the server to determine if this was intentional by the operator in control of the client. To prevent abuse, all of these cases need be handled the same way. Nothing is going to change that. Please don't shoot the messenger.

Deleting your account might be the best course of action. Sometimes it's nice to take a break. Maybe even find a better site.

I would go insane if I cared about every game like that. Even when I'm 1300 blitz or rapid, I usually am listening to documentaries or music and while I try to win, I leave games occasionally to do something else.

Unfortunately no one can really tell if D/C's are legit or not, so you have to take the point loss. This is the problem in every online game but there really isn't an easy fix.

IsraeliGal

no one cares.

Go talk to your ISP about your garbage internet connection.

Wits-end

I must be doing something wrong. I don’t think I’ve ever lost connection, at least that can recall. I play on lichess also, and the lag is very bad, the games/moves are jumpy, and many games I win by abandonment. Maybe I should complain, but I have other worries that seem to absorb my attention. Food prices, fuel costs, etc.

If you can’t handle a minor issue like that then you should definitely leave and never come back!

There are so many social issues in the world that you should research and think deeply about, not complain about losing a chess game due to internet connection…

And now after rereading your post I am even more dumbfounded. You are clearly old enough to have thinking ability, don’t you have a job, an occupation or a world afflicting problem to solve? What are people coming to.
