I was happy to contribute a good move to you, 6. c6. Originally I didn't look - but actually Houdini liked it - it's its top move (first time I get to use "it's" and "its" one after the other. Cool!)

Right now it's true that you still have a clear advantage - but you'll never survive against a strong engine from this position.

My Houdini 1.5 gives here 8...Nf6 with a +0.72 evaluation in white's favor. If you really use nothing but your own resources, expect to be crushed in under 30 moves. Maybe 35 if you're lucky.

Exactly as Solskytz said. Everything under 1.5+ in the opening is very likely losing for average players like we are.

I agree with mr. concert pianist, although I've never used an engine - but I've been told to have played against a 3000 rating in live chess and probably have many other times as well (they wait a minute and then start playing like a GM). :)

Could you beat Fritz, Shredder, etc  from that position?

Stockfish 5 x64 @31 ply likes 8...Nf6 +1.10

For those of you who might be confused by the plethora of engines out there, Stockfish 5 is the new TCEC champion. In short, the best chess engine in the world.

Maybe he can. I certainly couldn't :)

solskytz

<Aetheldred> I guess we could do a Stockfish vs. Houdini match, which would be a thrill in itself, but we're digressing...

As far as the current game here is concerned, one engine is probably as good as another... it's a bit like choosing the shark with the somewhat sharper teeth to eat you, I suppose...

8... Nf6 it is.

9.e4

solskytz

Houdini thought that the correct move here was 9. Nc3, with a +0.73 evaluation.

Other moves, in descending order of its appreciation, were 9. g3, 9. Ng5 and even 9. e3. Beats me why it prefers this to your move. Maybe it 'feels' that the pawn is more exposed on e4?

However, for Houdini, your move, 9. e4 is fifth best, and still gets a +0.54 eval in your favor.

I give you its next move: 9...Nbd7. This was calculated 18-ply.

Houdini didn't like both 9...Qb6 and 9...Bc5 quite as much, and 9...Qc7 was even farther back.

Bd7 was better that time
