I feel like a fraud

Does anyone else feel this way...

My rating has been climbing pretty well over the last few weeks bc of about 8 wins in a row (granted one was a timeout which I hate to win by).  I have been playing better I guess but I dont know why or how.  I went from 1200+ to 1500+ and I just dont feel like a 1500 player.  If you ask me Id say Im about 1250-1300 but somehow I keep winning.  I feel like when I play in this tournament in the 1400-1600 I will be exposed big time.  I wish I was more confident in my ability but I just honestly dont even think I understand the good moves I make a lot.  What gives?

perhaps you are picking up on subtle combinations and positions which you have learned/practiced (for example in tatics training), but you still do not know the strategies behind them yet. i'd suggest reading more strategy/theory and maybe you'll soon understand why a certain move is a good move.

or you've just been on a "lucky" streak and your rating will eventually fall back down to where it should be.

Do you know, precisely the same thing happened to me. I think sometimes, you are just in good form. Recently, I 've had a rude awakening with a few vicious losses.

I don't think anyone has a rating that puts them exactly where they should be.  A series of wins will bring your score way up and a series of loses will bring your score way down. I believe that if you can maintain a rating at a certain level for a decent amount of time,  it will be harder for you to move down from that rating.  However, after a series of wins like you are described, I would imagine that the next time you do lose you will lose alot of points.

A solution to timeout wins is to uncheck Auto-win on time. This applies only to non-tournament games.

If you play in tournaments then the next time you win by timeout in a tournament you can resign one of these saved timeout wins. This should help to stabilize your rating.

I've had the same concern.

I recently shot up from 1500 to the high 1700s.

This was due to the games won in two tournaments in a row.

I hate to say this, but I look forward to my rating readjusting because I just don't think it is accurate.

ratings go up. ratings go down. enjoy the game! :D

I confess to feeling the same way.  My rating is in the upper 1700s, but if you look at my statistics, my average opponent is rated around the upper 1300s.  This isn't by design Smile but because I've been inviting non-chess playing friends over here and usually play a few games with them.

Oh well, what comes around, goes around....

Ratings don't mean much.  If you learn something while you're here, or even just have fun, that's all that really matters.

hey, if your subconscious game is working, go with it! your conscious mind will either catch up or continue on awing what it does not have direct access to. enjoy it!
