I would say guessing that your students would be bad at chess, isn't a good way to attract them.

"Let me guess, you blunder your queen a lot" and the other things you guessed about them would probably detract a lot of players, especially stronger players, because they don't like thinking of themselves like that, and they don't want you to think of them like that either.
