I hate the King's Gambit. How do I play against it?

Whenever my opponent plays the kings gambit, I get annoyed. I almost always lose.

I need a good line to respond against the King's Gambit.

also is it true dat the King's Gambit has been refuted?

play 2...Nf6! usually lines transpose into harmless vienna gambit positions.

JackRoach

Checkmate their king.

DerekDHarvey

Cunningham's can be very effective.

I wouldn't say harmless...

Vienna Gambit is hard to play.

As white or black?

I play the French Defense so I won't run into the Vienna anyway.

As Black I welcome it. White is taking a big risk in return for a short game.

Play g4

Play g4, then g5, threatening a queen check. I'm making a blog about it, usually, your opponent will sacrifice their knight for 2 pawns, but then you have to defend nicely.

Accept, then play g4, and so on.

DerekDHarvey

1. g4 or 2 g4 or 3 g4?

RorschachTest1

the trick to the kings gambit is that it's terrible... you don't even need a refutation, the fact that it was played against you increases your odds of winning by roughly 50 percent. to be honest, I almost fell off my chair when I saw that such a good player has problems with the king's gambit, but I suppose everyone's got their own struggles in life.

1. g4. Yes, that will transition into king's gambit.

Yes Jack 3 ... h6 is good too. Holding on to the pawn is a real nuisance for White.

Thanks everyone! I will probably play one of these lines when I actually face it in one of my games.
