I play terribly as black

It's like I am all turned around.

And then it's like I should come up with some kind of good defence (with a name) against white.

What would the best way for me to address this and overcome it?

Start playing unrated games, and only play black. Practice makes perfect, as they say. Perhaps learn a few simple openings from the black point of view.

Do not "only play black."  That will mess you up.

My suggestion is learn the Modern Defence:  1...g6 2...Bg7 against everything.  (Except of course the trick 1 d4 g6 2 Bh6 Bg7 3 Bg7 1-0. )

What's your playing style, Defensive or Offensive. Anyway how do you respond to White's "e4" or "d4" move. These are the move that chess players rated 1200+ playing white will generally begin with. You can just respond with "e5" or "d5". Just remember that the goal is to control the center. If you need more tips just post other questions you have and i will try to answer them. Beginning chess players do not need to learn a opening with a name to play well. Did you try playing white?

When I started playing chess I did not use openings and loss some games and won others.

Now I am more confused than ever. Please explain a little bit  more.

When you are starting to learn to play chess, you need to learn the goal first. Every piece move must have a purpose or why did you make that move? You don't need to learn any openings right now. Just learn how to control the center with your pieces and pawns. Learn how to use your chess pieces ( the knight, rook ,bishop, etc) to capture your opponent's pieces. Do you know how to checkmate?

You should play as white and black instead of just black pieces always. That way you get a sense of how the game is played. Playing with white pieces has the advantage of making the first move, but that does not guarantee White's win. Chess is a game that is based on strategy. The chess player with a better strategy usually wins the game.

I would personally learn a defence for common white openings:

For example: learn scandinavian or sicilian defence for e4. Learn king's indian for d4. You get what I mean.

Black is often at risk in the opening due to his move disadvantage: this is why learning opening moves is theoretically more important for Black. Some openings delay the fight in the centre e.g 1...g6 2...Bg7 and remove the need to avoid opening traps by learning theory. This allows you to play your own game. If you don't like this opening 1... d6 2... Nf6 3... g6 4... Bg7 also works well.

dc1985 suggested you should play black exclusively for a while.  I think that is a bad idea.  Continue to play white in half your games.  When you do play black, play 1...g6 2...Bg7.  That is called the Modern Defence.

A sample line of the Modern Defence: 1 e4 g6 2 d4 Bg7 3 Nc3 d6 4 f4 a6 5 Nf3 b5.

or 1 d4 g6 2 c4 Bg7 3 e4 d6 4 Nc3 Nc6 5 d5 Nd4.

I agree with chessbeginner77 here.

I would really not play a hypermodern defense at your level. It's better to first really understand the classical idea's and just play e4 e5 or d4 d5 and then move on to the hypermodern defences like the KID, pirc or modern. Hypermodern chess theory is complex and if you do not understand the classical idea's you will not do well with the hypermodern defenses.

When I was in primary school, my friend and I had a theory that the white player in chess was always better. We played hundreds and hundreds of games, switching roles, but the white player always won. After about two months we gave up.

What are you doing wrong as black?  How is this different from what you are doing as white?

If just being black is part of it, perhaps play 3/4 as black.  At 1000 there really should not be much differenceas training for nm said.

Don't worry about color.  You are still at a beginning level of play.  Play over some master games and find a great player whose games appeal to you.  If you want to be a great attacker look at Tal or Kasparov.  If you want to be a positional genius look at Capablanca or Anand or Kramnik.  If you want to be a nutcase anti-semite, study Fischer (JUST KIDDING!!!! Bobby is tragic but he is the greatest and he is awesome) Then play the openings that your idol plays.

Actually Fischer really is an awesome player to copy because his style was simple and his opening repertoire was narrow.

Good luck!

adam920

I was lousy as black too and tried to learn openings and whatnot.  Then I just realized that openings are good for piece development mostly.  So answer his e4 or d4 with e5 or d5 then get your knights out there and just let it happen.

larz_chess

I lose more with white than black but I play more draws with black. For me it doesn't matter so much which colour I play. When you are at a 1000 level I would recommed to play "healthy" moves, theory isnt important because your opponents dont know them either.

ThePaladin

Look at games here on line or get a good book and replay the games that black won.  Imitation of success is how we all start when learning anything new, especially an art.  Painters start by painting like someone they admire.  Writers start by writing in the style of someone great who came before.  Study the games.  Learn the defences used by the masters.  And if you play like them, what's wrong with that?  Good luck.

larz_chess

Do you reallise that the topic starter has an 1000 rating? He doesn't understand what a master plays, either we dont but we understand already much more of them. When you study an opening the moves are important but in my opinion is the idea of the opening much more important than the moves.

bigdoug

I remember that even when I was just starting to play, I enjoyed the artistry of games played by the great players.

streetfighterchess84

i was like that then i studied some openings and now im better,i would do that, learn some thoery and its easier to work with

THEWHITEFOX

This is strange but sometimes I suck at beign white and sometimes I suck at being black. I try to balance this by playing by myself or with my chess computer. Use LittleChessPartner if you don't have a chess CPU.
