I think the WCM title should not be given out anymore

Well, it doesn't matter the strength around her, but I believe titles should not be awarded if a performance rating is as low as 1400, plus she has got the title as it's on her chess.com, her FIDE and in all tournaments.

Image if they let anyone become a "Master" of chess...

She’s not “anyone” - she’s represented her country at an Olympiad and won 4 out of her 10 games. That’s a pretty good job in my book and well done - I hope she continues to improve so that her title isn’t conditional any more. She posted an analysis of one of the games she played at the Olympiad a few weeks ago and has clearly learned heaps since then. It’s an encouragement to others that they can get better at chess too, whereas saying “she doesn’t deserve it” is just discouraging all around

Are you talking about the lady who's 1400? I'm sorry but she doesn't deserve a title.

I'm not titled but could beat her 100 out of 100 times.

As long as you're a woman, they are

Have you represented your country at a chess Olympiad and won 4 out of 10 games there? That sounds pretty deserving to me, as it does to FIDE, although it’s a conditional title until she reaches a FIDE rating of 1800

they removed the conditional recently, hence she got the title

No but it sounds like I would have won 10/10 games if I played against whoever she was up against.

This seems to be more of an issue that you have with the FIDE rule. Pulling gender into it is just muddying the water.

Again, a male player can earn a CM title for accomplishing the same thing - 50% in an Olympiad - even if their rating is hypothetically 1200 ...

This would also be bad. Even if a 1200 beat Naka, Magnus and Fabi to win a tournament he shouldn't be titled.

Avatar of Konaekkk

tbh if a 1200 beat naka magnus and fabi they would be rated like 2000 after the event

If a male player did that, I'd complain!

I'm fine with women titles, but as long as it's above 2000 fide or it gets silly

Hmm, but is it really fine that a woman can become a "Grandmaster" at 2300 just because she's a woman?

She doesn't become a GM, she becomes a WGM.

Avatar of Velocity

so whats the point if its not a GM. Its discrimination

Avatar of chesssblackbelt

Idk I think people just see it as its own title

The Olympiad is a tournament at which you represent your country. Your country chooses you. Jersey chose her as its first board and she won 4 out of 10 games. If you’re dismissive of that, well, you need to get your country to select you to represent them at an Olympiad and then win 4 out of 10 games there as well. Until then it just sounds like sour grapes from you

She's from the same country as me. Jersey isn't even a country, it's English. Shows it's a joke of a tournament.

Hmm... I wonder whether the inofficial NM or WNM title might be a more appropriate title as the achievement of competing in the Olympiad seems to be more of national importance...
