For many people, their highest rating is in online/correspondence chess compared to blitz/rapid, mainly because you can spend more time considering the positions

That's not how ratings work at all.  Ratings don't measure a person's skill.  It's always results relative to others.  I mean it's not even knowledge or good vs bad moves.  It's just results relative to others in that pool.  As attow points out everyone could be rated in the 10,000s and it doesn't change anything.

Online ratings are comparatively higher for at least two reasons.  The pool is weaker and new players make an account, lose some games, and quit, which injects rating points into the pool and artificially inflates it.  I believe this happens because comparing chess.com's reported users (7 million or something silly like this) vs actual active players.

Ding. You won.

ELO is math, it works by definition. But what it outputs numbers. It's up to us to give that numbers a meaning.

My FIDE rating is higher than my correspondance rating here on chess.com. And way higher than my live rating here. Maybe I'm just not that good online compared to OTB, where I grind out my wins with stamina over 5 hours.

I believe the way this site and every chess site I have ever been on, becuase of how the administrators attempt to deal with cheats, no internet rating at any level means any thing.  I believe the way this site and most others attempts to deal with cheats is most punishing to the lowest rated, and most favors the higher rated making all ratings pretty much meaningless.

The only thing that really matters within a closed rating system (chess.com is a closed system, USCF is a closed system, FIDE is a closed system) is the difference in ratings.

A player who is rated 200 points higher than me is expected to get I think 3 points out of four if we played 4 games. This will hold true in chess.com,  USCF or FIDE games because they are all based on the same ELO system.

The reason the ratings are a lie on this site is the same the the name Justice System is a lie in the USA.  Those charged with administration our permitted to cheat and persecute the innocent with out any meanigul due process.

It's mainly because most games are lost by large blunders at lower ratings (lets say 2050 and under). It's going to be more random at lower ratings.

TheUltimateBook

Does any one here believe that there are artificially low rated players that exist to retaliation or to punish players believed to be cheating?  If this were true, it could lower honest players rating inadvertantly and generally make ratings, especailly low ratings less meaningful as the cheated become uder rated and add to the corruption of the ratings.

Ben_Dubuque

Not compare able at all, my play online tends to be more loose than OTB mainly because I don't have as good vision on the computer when it comes to potential moves and plans

This what I believe on the matter.

Your Professional rating and online rating differ based upon these things.First of all you are a [removed -- VP] chess player until you have played 10000 games bottomline this is preferably based by type I.e rapid, blitz, ect.  So build a baseline. After that you have a reason to what your professional rating is. The difference is based upon experience in the positional/tactical knowledge needed to keep winning So if you we are talking about 1200-1700 rating range(online) and a 1650 is playing and wins against 1650-1700 and increases his rating to 1700. Then he faces above 1700 and drops back to 1650 and the builds it back to 1700. This time he gets put against.a series of 1500s he proceeds to drop back to 1650 again. It is safe to say he is able to build up to 1700 again but his professional rating is most likely between 1500 and 1650. So under the pretense that our "online rating" is our running rating or tracked rating .Then we can say it is our determinate for success. This is juSt where we end up once we sstop. The truth is we need to find our true rating and this can only be found with use of memory and hhonesty. The more you play the more you learn about your chess and your self. Everytime you play a sketchy game you should consider if it was luck or skill. Its just as important to note your weaknesses because your True rating is completely determined by this. SUMMARY if you are an eexperienced player(10000 games)( aswell prefered 3000-4000 games a year)then you know your running rating well .Start to be honest with yourself and know your strengths and weakness. Keep using your mind/ memory to keep your true rating . Id know if your llieing. For me I've played 8600 games in the last 18 months I am certain my professional rating is above 1600. I am currently a 1702 online rapid. Thanks let me know if this was helpful I try to be ppeace....

Not completely true. If they're an "experienced player" its about the importance of they're missing chess knowledge and ability to use the information yo. Its not rating inflation, that number is "SUCCESS" its about number of games and quality. This is "CHESS KNOWLEDGE". How much and "HOW"  you play determine professional success yo.

Where is your 1700? I see 1200 on blitz and 1000 on bullet. As those rating are usually 200 bogus than OTB, I guess your OTB would be 800-1000.

EvianWahter

I play [another site -- VP] most of the time because lagging issues on chess.com. Everyone knows this site has issues. I like playing here sometimes but usually random asf. [another site -- VP] is where i started and i enjoy its ease of use. To be honest my rating on here is so [removed -- VP] thanks to a bug which prevented my stats from recording. Another reason the friendslist doesnt work right on the app only can see a couple friends games and profile correctly. I am determined to boost my blitz rating on both sites as for rapid it will go up as soon as i get my paycheck yo. In need of a new phone all cracked. To note your neglect of experience will prove to be a problem for future understanding of where your problems really lie. THE RATING IS WHERE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE BASED UPON SUCCESS ON THE SITE NOT AS A REFERENCE TO A PROFESSIONAL RATING TO COMPARE THEM IS RETARDED THE GOAL IS TO FIND YOUR TRUE RATING BASED UP YOUR HONESTY AND EXPERIENCE GAINED ONLY YOU "KNOW" YOUR RATING AND PEOPLE YOU FREQUENTLY PLAY IF THEY ARE INTERESTED. ONLINE RATING DETERMINES SUCCESS WITH THE GOAL TO BE THE BEST YOU CAN AND 3000 being the end goal. My otb in and average tournament is  1650- rapid blits 1550 i am rated and these are my ratings as you can see their are other factors to the rating you are neglecting, with simple projection..

I saw a few of your games. (Experienced people can assess your rating by checking your play). You played 1.e4 2.d3. 3.f3. This show your lack of understanding of chess  theories. Dont lie people. Your OTB will be around 1000 ( no more than 1200 even if you are lucky). Please learn chess if you are really interested in it.  You will need (everyone will need) extensive amount of time and experience to improve though.

Good Luck

MickinMD

International master Jeremy Silman says chess.com ratings are about 200-300 points higher than the same player should have OTB.
