What chess needs is a billionaire to fund lower level tournaments with prizes, as well as to fund children’s chess programs, etc. Imagine what just 1 billion dollars could do for chess?

Tell me your ideas to increase chess popularity! ♟️

... A billion dollars, being donated to chess... That money could set up a few schools across the nation. Children would be encouraged even more so to practice chess and improve their intelligence.

Great idea JankogajdoskoFM! I think Magnus has enough money to start a bullet chess league and to try and market it to the masses. He should do this!

There should be a chess set in every hotel also!

Our culture could be obsessed with chess, it just isn’t.

The minds behind the promotion of chess have failed. It should be more popular, but it isn’t.

I guarentee if Elon Musk funded this, people would freak out. And most not in a good way.

Jankoga makes a good point. Most people just don't have the patience to withstand a game of chess if it takes a few hours to finish. Ironically, it would take a few hours to play through a major sports game, such as football or basketball.

@654Psyfox : I was thinking of him to aggregate this opportunity.

These are all interesting ideas.

I do believe the future is in bullet chess. It’s much more fun to watch and you can pause the video if you want.

I understand the beauty of long form classical chess. I just think the mass market would like to see lots of quick games more than the long form. Of course we keep the long form, just introduce shorter forms and really market it big time to see if it takes off!

A show like this could easily be done on YouTube

I can see that being a good show!

I'm going to be the minority here, but popularity isn't always a good thing. Once you begin introducing new people then standards begin to slide and it becomes a fad (see Covid, the Pog Champs, etc), and it makes things less competitive by introducing a 'participation trophy' mindset. Before working on popularity, chess needs to work on it's lack of gatekeeping in order to maintain higher standards.
