That is a very odd set; unlike any I've ever seen before. Google didn't turn up anything for me.
Looks terribly fragile.

Antique bone set? The bones of what? Oh wait, I think I found it. John Calvert Chess set. It's camel bone? I put in 'antique bone chess set' into Yahoo and its the first thing that came up. £180 of Chess board sitting there.
Nah, it's similar but not the same.
Hi,
Thank you both for your suggestions. I did some further googling and found a similar set that was labeled "Mexican". From that I googled "Mexican Bone Chess Set" and came up with some identical sets. Apparently, these are based on the "Spanish Pulpit" design. A couple of other sets of this type can be seen here.

Thanks again, this is a great site.

Hello,
I'm terrible at the game, but have always loved old chess sets. I am hoping that someone can identify this design. Spent a couple of hours searching online and the closest (but not quite) pattern I could find was named the "Spanish Pulpit". Any help appreciated.
Thanks, Tom
ps. forgot to mention, it is made from lathe turned, carved & drilled bone, king stands 4 1/4 inches.
