Ronald, if running the clock is OK, then there’s no slander and no shaming.

Then what's the advantage of "calling them out"?

William, if you are assuming that people will “hunt the target,” then you must think there’s something wrong with running the clock. And assume all you like, but I don’t mean offense. I just feel that other people should know if someone likes to run the clock. I don’t like to play people who run the clock and people shouldn’t have to play those who run the clock. I’d rather they resign, let me start a new game and not waste my time.

I don't assume, I know from experience. (And also, regardless of my own opinions or actions, I realize that this website is host to some less-than-intelligent people, who DO regard flagging as wrong, AND will witchhunt.)

So, people are going to read your forum, and will then go into live, recognize their opponent because you made a claim about them, and then abort the game to avoid having 2 minutes of their life wasted? Is that the intention?

I'm not going to defend flagging as an honorable or pleasant thing (I've had it done to me in a 15 minute game or two. :/ ) But "calling people out" is not acceptable practice, regardless of the offence.

Okay I've spent enough time here, I'm just going to wait for the forum lock.

We disagree. If people let the clock run for 20 to 25 seconds that’s one thing, but a lot more than that is unacceptable to me. And I’ve seen a lot worse. I for one would love it if I could know if a player liked to run the clock or not. If it’s acceptable behavior, fine, put a setting in Chess.com that allows me to avoid those players.

What do you mean by “forum lock”? Do you mean locking down this post so that no one can see it? Why would anyone do that? I haven’t named anyone.

Its obvious that you think running the clock down is a form of cheating. The New England Patriots do it every Sunday. You've only been here a yr and you're not that old. You've also created a thread called "cheating" and low and behold, it got locked.surprise.png Mon Dieu!shock.png Don't start a controvercy.......just start naming & shaming in the forums so we can see how that works out for ya. Just pretend your a fabulous lawyer arguing a case before the Supreme Court. Maybe a review of MaCarthyism would help.wink.png

Of course, "killing the clock" is a winning tactic in many sports and "blitzing" one`s opponent in OTB Chess tournaments (although minimized somewhat with the advent of the "delay" features in most of these types of events) could be considered as a form of this in a reverse way to "work the clock". In OTB tournaments, if one`s opponent is going to be absent from the board for 15 minutes or so, for whatever reason, I believe that this particular player, as a courtesy, should inform his opponent and the TD. I once had an opponent in a USATE tournament (time control, 40/2, G/1 d5) leave the board after 45 minutes of his own time (I had used maybe 10 minutes of my own) and never came back. He obviously overstepped the 1st time control. I was quite angry when I found out that he just simply drove home! He lived in Parsipanny, NJ the same town that the tournament was being held. He was given a warning by the head TD to never do that again and either resign or pretty much stay at the table or at least the room.

Thank you, ChessFlyfisher. Talk about a sore sport, the jerk who left you sitting there.

Ronald, no, I don’t think it’s cheating. That never even occurred to me. Why was that the first thing that occurred to you? Can you explain that? It’s just extremely annoying. I’m not sure why THAT’S not obvious. It’s one thing if I’m on a PC; then I can just start a new game while the other one’s still going. But I play on my cell phone 99.9999999% of the time and I am unable to play two games simultaneously on my cell phone.

Yes, I started a thread about cheating, and it got locked. So what?

That doesn’t define me anymore than you making assumptions defines you.

To the OP;  I apologize if my comment "implied" anything about you. The mistake was on my part. I couldn't distinguish between "running the clock out".......and....."naming & shaming". Wasn't sure what you were going for there........a rule of chess......or......a rule of the site. Sometimes new members will disguise a thread, and a lot of times new members ask the same questions. And too my old friend "tubebender"......yes, things are well with me......well, except my dam smoking problem. Can't seem to get below 4-5 cigs a day. A couple of weeks ago, I did 1 cig with the patch and my heart started making funny noises.  I'll have to cut down without the patch.........or until my "clock runs out".surprise.png
