If time travel was possible and you could spend money to buy a ticket to go in time to watch a chess match or chess tournament as a spectator, then which one would you go see?

i would go back to see the Souss Interzonal and watch Fischer have temper tantrum and quit the tournament

Time travel is possible.  Real picture in 1941:  Dude is definitely traveling time!

how did that guy go back in time?

also what happens if i were to go back in time and then i decided to shake hands with my other self in the past.

is it possible for the same object (or set of DNA molecules) to occupy the same location at the same exact place and time ?

Avatar of Murgen

Your self in the past would not have (exactly) the same molecules as you do: how different they would be would depend on the amount of time that had passed.

If you were shaking hands with a previous iteration of yourself you would not be occupying the exact same place.

If somehow two identical versions of yourself were to occupy the exact same space (down to the Planck length) what would happen to the atoms?

Would they undergo fusion?

In any case "you" would (presumably) "double" in weight! Laughing

Maybe I'll start watching Fringe again.

If I could travel back in time, I'd be on a mission who actually discovered chess and witness what a primitive game looked like.

I'd bust out the Breyer AGAINST Ruy Lopez, hehe.

I'd like to play some of the masters of the late 1800s early 1900s.

I'd want to talk to them because I'm curious how they'd describe my style.

It IS possible.  I do it all the time.  I sure as heck don't spend any money however.  For one thing, when I get there I'm naked as a jay bird.

Time travel is definitely possible, and will likely be attainable at some point, assuming humanity doesn't self-destruct or get annihilated by aliens.

time travel isn't possible because if it was possible, people from the future would go back in time and come to 2014. even a slight change in the space time continuum can have catastrophic consequences that unravel over a series of events. because the world hasn't been destroyed yet, time travel will never be invented.

You're making assumptions about reality.  Meta-universal theory is much deeper than this..

(Not sure if theory is correct term)

I would follow Morphy around and witness all of his matches.

Have to agree with you.

If time travel is possible, we probably haven't reached that point in time yet.

From what I understand from others, time travel into the past is theoritically possible, but only to the point in the past where they have built the time travel machine.

THat is what I mean. You couldn't fly until they built the first airplane. We haven't reached the point where we have the means to time travel yet.

According to Doctor Emmett Brown in Back to the Future Part II, whenever a time-traveler alters key events occurring in the past, they effectively bring an alternate timeline into existence at their point-of-entry, and their original timeline is erased, even though its events are not forgotten by the time-traveler
