Before the first official tournaments in early-mind 19th century, it wasn't actually regulated which side goes first.
In the famous Immortal Anderssen game, Anderssen actually played with the black pieces and went first.

Stalemate is a win or get rid of touchmove.

the pawns should be able to move backwards and they should be able to promote to kings

You should be able to borrow pieces from your opponent!!!

But your opponent could charge you pawns as interest.

A group of random players (lets say 5 per group) are on a team against the other team, playing a single game.

Each player takes a turn to make a move, and no one is allowed to communicate their ideas. Each teammember must make the best move he sees, and try to figure out what his or her team members' ideas/plans are.

I'd abolish letting players in "completely" lost games win on time. I think it's dumb to completely outplay your opponent and lose.

Or, whenever you check your opponent, they take a shot. Perpetual checks would be fun to give. Also, all chess players would be alcoholics and drunks, the way it should be.

The possibility of self-taking would be interesting.

Checkmates would be harder to make, but the lost mates would still require a loss in material for the mated party, and development would have many interesting possibilities, a few of whom below:

  • pawn sac for a quick fianchetto
  • bishop takes on b3/e3 instead of being trapped

There are yet other things to consider:

  • no more back-rank mates
  • no more smothered mates
For these last two reasons, I wouldn't this to become the vogue in regular chess. The others, however, I find to be intriguing, at the least.

In the traditional Chess variant, I'd probably remove the checking/stalemate system, as many have already said

The selftaking would actually make a pretty good variant.

Given that chess cheating seems to incite a lot of hatred, Internet chess websites maybe should be outlawed, unless they can eliminate it.

Will never happen. There are a thousand ways to cheat on an internet site, and other than engine uses, none can be tracked down.

This is one that I have thought about with the purpose of eliminating whatever advantage white has of starting the game. All current rules apply up to the point where black is checkmated. Then black gets an extra move. If black then can checkmate white, it is a draw. White at the move wins, you say; I say draw:

Whatever advantage white has, it's definitely not worth an extra move.
