If you could go back.

I would have built a better tactical foundation right from the start. Right now my tactics are seriously lacking and it is killing me. I could be close to expert if not for my poor tactics, exhibited quite well this weekend at MD HS States, where I just dropped 28 points.

What plan would you follow in devising a good tactical regiment?

If I were teaching a student and he was very young and just starting, I would make sure his first priority was tactics, and he would do an entire tactics book at a time- like 303 Tricky Chess Tactics is not bad.

YOu would start a beginner kid with 'tricky tactics'? I'd think basic tactics would be necessary first.

Hi,

If I could go back..i would have learned to play chess when i was younger instead of waiting to play with my children on vacations only.  I would have appreciated the game that sit on teh shelf waiting to be opened.

Its not only a game, its an adventure, a challenge to the mind, to stay focused, to search for new ways, to better oneself..the list goes on and on.

Most of all, I would have met more wonderful ppl over the board, with a common interest.  IF i had done that..I would have been beating most of you reading this. ;)  (well, except for the highest rated players here)

Oh well I guess I would start with something simpler. But the point is that I wish I had worked through a lot more tactics books when I was younger.

Good question. I would have asked my parents to hire a chess coach. Instead, I would play a move and then turn the board around and play against myself. Pathetic.

I'm glad I didn't start playing seriously until I got old(er). I have a lot more self-control and focus now.
