These questions are hilarious! just the fact that he has so many and they are petty most of the time

Somewhere inside kurogkug's mind is a guy rolling a rock uphill, and the closer he gets to the top the heavier the rock gets. Epic.

And BorgQueen is chained to a cliff where a buzzard eternally eats his liver as punishment for bringing fire to the mortals.

Cool, it's about time this thread took a more productive turn. :D

Actually, I never thought he had any serious interest in chess. I also never thought he was into self-help.

This accepts the premise that he is sincere.

This sentence confuses me.  I've always believed that tactics were to make you gain an advantage (positional or material, mainly material)?

What I meant is that tactics deals with how the pieces move. Hopefully, good tactics will result in an advantage. Unfortunately, bad tactics will probably result in a disadvantage. So tactics can be advantageous or disadvantageous.

i just did a quick look for a definition and found: "Maneuvers used against an enemy". That seems to sum up what I meant. Strategy deals with how you want to attack or defend, where you want to put your pieces, whether you want an open or closed game, etc. Tactics deals with the actual movements of the pieces to try achieve your strategic plans.

P.S. It seems the two posts I thought were taking this thread in a new direction were deleted. The one line post I have between two of goldendog's actually have nothing to do with goldendog. Apologies for any confusion.

Sometime in a distant future, BorgQueen, now a respected veteran in his community, slowly and peacefully decays into a venerable old age, passing the days sitting peacefully in the Aussie sun that fills the porch of the Nice Old Folks Home. He is satisfied. He has done enough in his long life. Then a familiar, wizened hand reaches over to him and touches the hem of his shirt, and the voice comes forth, "Answer me friend BorgQueen..what is definition...I await to your answer."

The word, 'plan' can be used to describe the layout of a building on paper, it would be, 'the buildings, 'plan'.  It could also be used to refer to an idea or a strategy.

The word, 'method' can be used to describe, 'a way of doing' something'

There you go.  I gave the answer you were looking for.

It does not mean that the word, 'strategy' can only be used as a military term or in reference to competition. (I say this because I have a feeling that you were trying to build up to this with all the questions)

I'm not BorgQueen, but I'm going to respond to this anyway.

There are way, way more positions than just a quadrillion. The number of chess positions may outnumber the number of atoms in the entire universe. It would be futile to attempt to count them! Indeed, I don't think we have named a number high enough- perhaps a Googolplex, or failing that, Infinity.
