Hey, my name is Melanie, and I'm new to chess.com.  I've been playing chess very seldomly, very often badly might I add, for about five years.  I came to this site to become a better chess player and meet some friends here.  :)

welcome to chess.com, hope you will enjoy and get better in your games here.

Hello Shlara, and welcome to Chess.com!  As I was typing in a similar thread just a few minutes ago, my situation is very similar to yours.  Everyone has been very helpful and kind to me during my short time here.  And there is a lot of great resources to have access to as well.  Welcome aboard, and enjoy!  Smile

Hi Melanie.

goldendog

You will have fun here, Melanie.

If you meet any rude people on live chess, ignore them and keep enjoying the many nice and helpful ones.

The young have an unfair advantage.

Welcome! I think you've come to the right place. I only started playing chess last November, when I was house-bound by an illness. I downloaded the Chess.com iPhone app and started playing online chess in February, I think. It's a fantastic way to learn. If you're interested I'd be glad to accept a challenge from you.

Let me attempt this again.  I goofed that last one beyond repair.  Welcome, Melanie.  You will have fun here, but as with all groups, some are not so fun.  Ignore them and move on.

Sigh. And I thought something special was happening with a thread like this getting bumped.

I miss Melanie.

I ask how to get started in OTB tournaments and get 0 replies....

A girl says, "hi" and gets 19 replies.Undecided

Honestly, the less sophisticated the post (or if the post is insane like "should I quite chess", even better), the more replies it gets. Most people here end up talking about pancakes or something, like that's a top 10 food.

This is what you call a dead thread coming alive again!Cool  so, to keep a good thing going, tomorow I become a paying member, but now I'm am worried I might miss all those commercials, especially girls wanting to hook up with you,  I would have to ask my wife's permission first, hmmmmm?

Better yet: Show her the ads. She'll most likely sport you the membership ;)

That is the sad and glorious reality of life on planet Earth.

If you want to get started in OTB tournaments, you need to find them first.  The USCF website and their magazine is a good source for rated tournaments by state.

Also, I see you are in Massachusetts.  They have a good magazine of local chess, called "Chess Horizons":

Good luck.
