I'm so confused

Practice makes perfect - play against your laptop at first. maybe !
If you click on 'LEARN' (top bar) then on 'RULES & BASICS' you'll get onto a good tutorial for beginners. Here's the link.

Youtube is a great resource. For me, it is so much easier to watch videos than it is to break out a book and board

1. Learn how the pieces moves and their relative values.
1.5 Don't play blitz.
2. Learn basic checkmates like king and queen vs lone king.
3. Lean opening principals (center, develop, castle).
4. Learn basic tactics (pin, fork, skewer).
5. Learn basic strategy (explore terms like doubled pawns, backward pawns, isolated pawns, and active pieces)
6. Play long time controls. Keep all the basics you've learned in mind, but mostly try to lose as few pieces as possible (be ahead in the relative count you learned at #1). Once ahead, exchange pieces of equal value until you can win with #2 (remember pawns can promote to queens). When losing, play until checkmated so you can see how your more experienced opponent finishes a game.

After 100 games or so move on from there.
