Here is how this works. I will post a position and give some information. Your job is to find the move and why. When 500 views(or 50 comments) is reached I will add another topic. when 1000 views(or 100 comments) is reached I will add another. This forum is designed to improve your:

1. Borad vision

2.Tactical vision

3.Positional understanding

4. Thought Process

5. Opening and endgame understanding

Lets start and enjoy!

Black to move. White has just played h4 stopping Qh3+. Now white can go after c6 and play for a win. What should black do?

DMGame

What to do: Break down the position, then comment what you think black should do and why.

1... Rxh4! 2. gxh4 Qg4+ 3. Kh2 Qh4+ with at least perpetual.

chesster3145

Are we allowed to post interesting positions on this forum too?

DMGame

Yes you may. But you have to copy the way I do it. Chesster there are 2 rooks that can take on h4. which one are you talking about?

chesster3145

1... Rhxh4. Better?

Till_98

Alex´ line is also what I thought. You gotta take with the h rook though. Because if Rexh4 then gxh4 Qg4+ Kf1 Rxh4 Ke1.

I am also not 100 percent certain about the line 1... Rhxh4 2.gxh4 Qg4+ 3.Kh2 Qxh4+ 4.Kg2 Qg4+ 5.Kh2 Qf3 6.Qxe4 and when black recaptures white plays Rxc6 threatening checkmate on the back rank. Black is up a few pawns on the queenside but its not completely clear. And as Alex mentioned white can play Rh1 which will stop any attack from black. Its important to see that after 1...Rhxh4 2.Rh1 Rxh1 3.Rxh1 the h7 pawn is hanging so black can not really take on d4. Not the best puzzle if you ask me.

This position is from a rapid game I played against a 1900 player.

White is almost winning thanks to the monster on a5.

If he can occupy b6 he will almost win on the spot.

The problem is that 1. Rb6? Nd7 followed by ... b7-b6 isn't what White had in mind.

1) Evaluate 1. Rxf6 and attach a !, !?, ?!, or ? to it.

2) What move should White play here?

3) How does White go about winning this position?

Till_98

i didnt see Qe6+ Alex, good job! So it seems like both moves are good.

@ post 12:

1)  Rxf6 is interesting because whites next move will be Rb6 and black has difficulties to activate his rooks. Anyway I dont see how whites gonna win the game after that... black might after Rxf6 Qxf6 Rb6 Qe7 put his rook on f8 and play with f5. So I would give Rxf6 a ?! = dubious

2) Rb3 probably. simply with the idea of doubling or tripling on the b file. If black plays b6 after Rb2 then white can play Rfb1 which would lead to trouble for black.

3) Double the rooks on the b file or triple on the b file, if black can still hold it together then you can play slowly. Bring your king to d3, there it is super well placed. then you can transfer your knight to a place where it is better than on d2.

Ugh... I misplaced the queen again.

Till_98

lol

DMGame

Wow! The correct move is Rexh4!! the difference is very small. Can you find what that differance is?

DMGame

and yes alex seeing Qe6+ is the key. That is why this works.

All I can say so far is I'd write Rxf6?... After Qxf6 I don't see a decent plan for white. No definite counterplay on the queenside (correct me if I'm wrong) and his e pawns are permanent weaknesses. I don't agree with your initial evaluation of "almost winning" right now

Okay, maybe that was too optimistic, but you have to agree that White holds all the cards here. Black can never really put pressure on White's weak pawns, and so he has all the time in the world to improve his postion.

DMGame

Black is much better here. After Rexh4 Rh1 Rh3!! and soon Rxh1 black trades all rooks and has a winning endgame. I will post how the game ended soon.
