I was 250 a month ago and losing to the very annoying scholars mate etc before I figured out how to block it. now I'm just below 500 and I am beating 500 players pretty routinely. I do suffer from concentration issues l, and my last win the player resigned even though they had a queen check to play against me. anyway, what I'm saying is why am I improving even though I'm still not great. it just feels so murky.

It was then when I didnt know how to move the pieces and I was 400...it wasnt difficult to improve further with a little effort

In my opinion there are different levels of knowledge at different rating points. So you may see the scholars mate at 500 but not at 700. However, other new attacking lines that are not at the 500 level you will see at 700. Another example is time controls. When playing rapid I see d4 a lot and very little e4. I drop down to blitz and all I see is e4.

Yeah D4 slow and positional from what I've gathered. E4 Pretty quick and sharp
