Income from Chess Skills

How much income per annum can the following person generate strictly with the chess:

United States male, age in the 20's, lives in a major metropolitan area, is FIDE rated 2200, Fide Master, and USCF National Master.  Ratings have plateaued for years, with no visible progress to making the IM title.  Has some international tournament experience but has never won any.

This person also is bilingual, and relatively good looking and presents himself and communicates well (which I added this fact to address the issue of coaching or dealing with the public)

is he black?  black people make less money

So nobody knows?

He will make approximately 0 from tournament winnings, but might make 40-60 dollars an hour if he is an amazing coach and can somehow land tons of students like Dan Heisman, more likely he might make 25$ for an hour session and have around 3 students a week. That's my guess.

I hope he can write books and magazine articles.

Thanks for the input.  What should be this gentleman's yearly income based on your figures per hour?

Getting books or articles published (for money) is wicked hard though!

Simuls might give some income.

Not enough to bother calculating it.

Thanks for your answers, everyone.

There are lots of unknowns here, John. One of them is what state he lives in. Popularity of chess varies from state to state.

However, there's also an upside. If the chess master has good people skills, he can build his clientele and get CA$H.

I get 25$ an hour coaching a 3rd grader, and i'm in highschool...should be more if you know how to network & communicate

Kasporov_Jr , Is it hard for you to attract and retain clients?

Taking lunch money from a 3rd grader??     Why am I being labeled a war monger???

I haven`t coached on chess.com though the thought crossed my mind.

I wonder if folks would want to sign up for group lessons so each student would pay not much maybe 10 dollars an hour and have zillions of students at once but only 10 dollars.

At schools where I coach this works but I have not tried it on chess.com.

my mom is an elementary school teacher who is also the chess sponser, so parents usually ask her if I can privately tutor their kids since they know me.

Let me wrap my head around this. By your own admission, your in high school. So your a teenager 14-18yrs old.  You get $25. an hr, and "it should be more". I think I got that.  I drove those kids to school in a bus for 15 yrs, and got $10 an yr, and NO dental.  OK!

Kasparov_Jr, Good for you. I hope you get more students and get paid more.

Ronald, don't be jealous. It's all about supply and demand, and right connections. I guess there is more demand for his skills in his particular case than it was for you and your skills. Perhaps you could also be a teacher but didn't ask the school director or others. Perhaps you didn't work hard enough to get more money. But then, there's no judging others. We all have our unique, different paths in our lives. Let's not be jealous of each other and wish each other well. Peace.

NM Dale , You might have a good idea there. I plan to get some master coaching in the future and group studies are fun. Good luck to you!
