Increasing use of certain openings

I've been playing Live Chess more recently (my rating is in the 1000s but that's because I like playing unrated chess), and I've noticed that certain openings are being used more often that others: The Napoleon opening, the Bishop opening, and the Scandinavian Defense. I wonder why things openings are being played more often that others?

Matthew : my age is four times your age and I play chess for over 65 years  --  and I can assure you that the general choice for openings changed through the years and will change forever as masters often use their favorite openings a lot and influence us, common chess players.

I have seen French coming up, and the Najdorf, the Indian Defences, the move c4 from Fischer and the move f3 in the Sicilian, all varying in popularity  and dis-approval through the years.

For you and me it depends on our opponents, they each have the same preferences; e.g. I never open with 1. d4

What is exactly your Napoleon Opening ?      Regards, RomyGer

Thank you for commenting on my post. The Napoleon Opening comes about after white moves their pawn to e4 and black moves their pawn to e5.  The white Queen moves to f3 to put pressure on the Black's f7 pawn. The idea of the opening is that f7 is only defended by the King, which means that if you play correctly, and your oppent makes a mistake, you can checkmate him.

There are all kinds of fads in the opening. Different servers go through different fads, quite often people lose to basic opening traps and try replicate them in their following games, leads to all the weaker players playing the same opening for a while.

Also, whatever Carlsen and the like play becomes popular quickly, I remember after Magnus' impressive Kings Gambit game, you couldn't go anywhere for weeks without having to deal with 2. f4.

2. Qf3 just smells like easy points to me these days though.  Tongue Out
