Well, it was clearly a sufficient material, I see a lot of people surprised to see their own pieces turn against them.
And this is reccuring subject here.
People hoping for a draw are often unfamiliar with the exact FIDE wording:

Except where one of the Articles: 5.1.a, 5.1.b, 5.2.a, 5.2.b, 5.2.c applies, if a player does not complete the prescribed number of moves in the allotted time, the game is lost by the player. However, the game is drawn, if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player’s king by any possible series of legal moves. |
Obviously if none of - 5.1. a (checkmate), 5.1. b (resign), 5.2. a (stalemate), 5.2. b (dead position), 5.2. c (draw by agreement) applies, then one whose flag has fallen has lost a game.
And since mate can be achieved by a series of legal moves, this is reinforced, losing player can not get a draw.
