Interest for Potential Online World Open

Hey everyone!

As a lot of you are probably aware of by now, the whole coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is taking the world by storm and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.  For those who still somewhat actively follow the chess scene, the World Open is supposed to take place during Independence Day weekend (from July 1st-5th, 2020) in Philadelphia, PA (if I recall correctly).  Considering how COVID-19 is currently not showing any signs of slowing down in the United States, there's a decent chance that this year's World Open might be cancelled.  If that happens, I was wondering if anyone here might be interested in a potential USCF-rated online World Open tournament with various sections (Open, U2200, U2000...., U1200, UNR) where there are a certain number of long games held per day (1 G/120 game on the first day and 2 G/120 games for each day after that).

You can't rate that time control with online play under US Chess regulations. The maximum time control that can be rated is G/29.

https://new.uschess.org/news/online-rated-us-chess-events/

From that (emphasis mine):

  • The Executive Board (EB) moves that all games submitted by Tournament Directors (TDs) for rating that were played online via the internet or by other means specified in Chapter 10 of the Rules of Chess (7th Ed.) shall only affect players’ online ratings. Online play shall not be used to update players’ over-the-board ratings.

Ah, I see. We can just modify the time control for the online World Open to an online USCF-rated 9-round G/29 tournament that lasts 2-3 days with the rating sections I mentioned.
