Interesting Chess Variant: Reversed Chess

As already remarked, this is not a variant. It is just playing normal Chess with differently colored pieces, and as a mirror image. In fact there exist hundreds of such non-variants. E.g. you could play with brown and white pieces, or red and blue pieces. And you could rotate the board 90-degrees, so that you have to play sideways. Or, if you have a magnetic travel set, hang it from the ceiling...

Just like at the sample game it will help you understand better. You'll see that everything is in reverse. Opening theory goes out the door. Imagine Chess, but without the Ruy Lopez, Italian Game etc. My nephew was able to beat me in reverse Chess because all my years of preparation and studying theory didn't do anything for me. As one member brilliantly put it, this variant gets rid of the "memorization" aspect of Chess.

So does chess960, chess with new pieces, chess with green and blue pieces on a green and blue board, and so on. If you think about it, opening theory still exists. you just see the board differently, and so you think that it's different.

Wow Vlad. Your nephew is a prodigy!

Stop saying that. No he's not, he just got lucky like I already said. I would have beat him any other day. I am much better than him. It's just beginner's luck, that's all.

Black is basically white, just one tempo short.

If white choose to give black the "white advantage" then opening theory is mirrored.

Vlad, I think your dear nephew has been studying up on that brilliant virtuoso Paul Morphy, who has the misfortune of being all but neglected by the chessing establishment.  It has been of my experience that those who become acquainted with the ideas of Morphy possess a certain wisdom that is hard to come by in other chessists.  Why, I believe your nephew based his play off of one of Morphy's most intriguing yet obscure games, and it went right under your nose.  Now, Vlad, there is no reason to be ashamed of your honest mistake.  The chessing society that is so dominant in today's age puts too much of an emphasis on Greco, Ruy Lopez De Segura, Euwe, Wei Yi, and Kasparov, better known as the "5 greats of chess".  I cannot argue that those distinguished men deserve search an appelation, but only wish that there was more recognition of the other fine players who have contributed to the game, with Morphy being a prime example.

Finally, someone who knows how to create a good variant! Most of the ones you see around here are simply crazy - the "let's add a piece that moves in a circle and call it the Platypus" types, or the "let's give each side 3 consecutive moves and make the board a 3-dimensional green donut" ones. Rarely to you see a variant that is well designed and preserves all of the simple, elegant fun of regular chess - but this time we have one right here! Well done Mr. Herceg!

Thank you. I always do what I can to give back to the Sport and community that's been so good to me.

I wonder if endgames stay the same...this concept needs to be explored further.

HorusTheThird

It stays exactly the same. This is just chess with a rotated board.

It's the exact opposite of the same. In fact it's reversed.

How? The king and queen switch places, the colors switch, the square labeling system is messed up. It looks like it's different, in the begining. But look, here's the Ruy Lopez:

It looks different, but it certainly isn't.
