Bobby Fischer, Vishy Anand, and Magnus Carlsen prefer 1e4.
Kasparov and Aronian prefer 1d4.
Looks like both are fine.

I recently made the switch to d4 after 6-7 yrs of e4 play and I must say as devoted I was to the e4 cause openings such as sicilian and ruy lopez are hard to crack but I find now that I'm winning a lot more with white when I play d4.
How can you call such a successful person nuts???
lol
The first move doesn't determine the chracter of the game: the Berlin Defense to the Ruy leads to a complex, slow maneuvering game after 1.e4. The Botvinnik variation of the Semi-Slav leads to mind-blowing tactics after 1.d4
I agree. It's like that whole egregious "open/semi-open/closed" games business. (eek!)
Hey! Then what's 1.Nf3 for? Chess refuseniks?
And let's not even mention the 1.b3 people. Their brains must be screwy.
Kramnik has proved Fischer wrong..Kramnik hypothesis 1.e4 1/2-1/2
Really? Fischer only said: "1 e4 best by test!"
This does not mean White must win beginning with 1 e4. For Fischer it was his best choice! He proved it. (Tal should have played only 1 e4 because his results with 1 e4 were clearly better than any other move he played instead! - A GM - unfortunately I forgot who - once wrote: "Tal should have played only 1 e4 - here he was World Champion. On other openings Tal was 'only' a very strong GM!")
T. V. Petrosian and Kramnik had/have a different chess style. So what was fine for Fischer (and Kasparov - althoug he first played 1 d4) doesn't need to be 'best' for them.
This a site for basically full of e4 players so not going to get much conversation from many d4 players here. Easy win.
By one game, hardly a big enough sample.
