Is analysis board bad for you?

Sort:

This is just an opinion question for you guys. I started using the analysis board to think of combinations and my rating has greatly increased; but in real life because we dont have the luxury of an analysis board (at least one that the opponent can't see) is it bad to get used to using this feature?

Thx

The analysis board has improved my game on the table. I've discovered my common mistakes with it and find myself using it less often. It's a learning tool in my eyes, not a crutch.

The more you play chess, the better you will become. Regardless of what other materials you use.

The analysis board helps you see what you normally would not see--true. However, I usually think for at least a minute in complex positions, before using the analysis board, so it is definitely not a crutch for me.

I refuse to use it.  If I am not capable of learning how to play the same way as some of the grand masters, then I do not need to be playing.

Why do you play on Chess.com? Grand Masters generally play OTB times games, not something you find here.

I think that people need to realize that there are massive differences between live chess, where two people sit down to play across a physical board, and correspondence chess where there is no limit to the time you can spend thinking about a move, the ability to use databases and the ability to try out moves on an Analysis Board!

You really shouldn't rely on any style of play you develop in correspondence chess to help you when you play live.

Excuse me? I play touch move, no analysis board, no computers, no internet searches on opening variations, I simply play.

My stand in this thing is, whether you use an analysis board or whatever program available for you regardless of the fact that you just use, play or rely on it or get addicted to it, what matters  is that you learn something from it whenever or wherever it is available to you. And you are not doing anyone or yourself wrong when you use, play, rely on it(whatever you want to do with it).  As long as you learn while you have it. As long as you improve. As long as you get better not just as a player but also as a person. GO! Why would it bother you if you rely much or get addicted on something if it makes you better in one way or the other even if you can't have it on real life games? And hey, think about it. Do the things that you've learned using the analysis board in an online game get "washed away" when you switch to play real-world games?

So to summarize that novel up, I say Ilya, use it as often as you want. Rely on it. Absorb it. Even if you can't have one like that in the real world, what matters most is what you have learned from it. 'Cause that will remain in you regardless of wherever you are, whether in online games or real life games. :-)

i think you should use it, except when you play me. Wink

It is available to all who play any CC chess on most sites, therefore you should expect it to be used against you, I see no reason why you should feel bad in anyway to use it, yes I do believe it makes us lazy (I use it too to save on dwindling brain cells) and if you play OTB then it may not improve your OTB play (then again I dont think it would harm it either), but if you dont care about these points then its fine to use it.

I do try to use my brain to visualize my games but do often go to the analasis board to work through a series of moves my brain cant easily handle, as long as you enjoy the way you are playing it really doesnt matter, your opponent will never know or care if you use it or not.

Bottom line, in all probability, anyone who uses the analasis board should play a fair bit better than not using it, but I dont think it would add more than maybe 100 points onto your rating really, you still have to have the ideas for moves to try out on the analasis board, it doesnt come up with good moves for you.
