Also @BoboTheFlyingSheep67 can you verify that chess is the national sport of Russia? Because from my research it isn't.
Chess is considered to be the national sport in Armenia.It is a misconception that chess is the national sport in russia .The national sport of Russia is Bandy.Chess is just considered t be a famous sport in Russia along with other sports like basketball......
So I think that chess is considered to be a sport in many countries...

@vishyanandishere, I heard it in some chess video, so I probably cannot verify that. The video said "majority of the best chess players are Russian, because it is their national sport" or something along those lines. This comment was made "in passing" and the creator of the video most probably didn't bother to verify the facts. Sorry about that.

@BoboTheFlyingSheep67 the chess video was either made a long time ago when the USSR was still in power or had wrong facts. Either way, you are right: chess is NOT the national sport of Russia.

No it is not because a sport requires team playing and physical exertion.
Also, in different countries the definition of sport is different- in Hungary chess IS a sport.
