Is Chess a waste of time for non-pros?

yes it is a complete waste of time for non-pros. they should not be allowed to play. since pros come from the ranks of non-pros, eventually there will be no pros, and therefore no players

also chess is suspected as a cause in some fingertip cancers...

The_Ghostess_Lola

How many non-pros aren't there ?....er better, how many pros are there ?....hmmm....you think 40 ?....tops ? "Professional" meaning exclusively making an average / legitimate living off playing chess (with an average lifestyle)....I think 40 may be too many....sadly....oh, exclude teaching as income....

The_Ghostess_Lola

You have the super-gms (1st tier), then the active 2nd tier gm's, then maybe handful of others....

There is nothing wrong with having chess as a hobby. There is plenty of chess literature to enjoy.

The way I see itOn a list of most useful things you could be doing in the world, chess isn't very high. But then again, on a list of people who know what they're talking about, I'm not high.

I have another perspective. I believe chess is a waste of time as anything other than a hobby. So I believe perhaps the opposite -- it is a waste of time for pros.
At the same time, I don't believe my "belief" to be objectively true. I'm sure that if I, myself, spent time becoming a chess pro, it would be a waste of time for me. Because there are many other things I'd rather do, or better serve others by doing. I believe that if chess is honestly, truly, what someone wants to pursue in life -- it is not a waste of time for them. I suppose I only think it is a waste of time for pros when it is pursued in vain and without perspective of other options? Like, pursuing a chess title for its own sake would surely be a waste of time. Pursuing chess because you truly love it, is not a waste. At least, not any more a "waste" than anything else (if you want to get philosophical).

What a reply. I agree absolutely with you.

i have never met anyone who does not waste time in some way or the other. i waste time on chess, despite that my rating is not increasing (hell, yes, i AM touchy about my chess.com rating :P )

may be i should waste more time. chess is a wonderful game and you are sorted till your last breath if you are at it.

edikg

As long as you enjoy doing it, it's not a waste of time :)

In the end, we are all on this earth for a limited time, there is no way to extend it so it all comes down to how you want it fill in the blank period of time that you're on it (yes I know that sounds depressing)

DjonniDerevnja

Waste or not. If i play to much I sometimes feel my head is boiling and some pressure. I guess that the smartest things do to  when its like that is to go outdoors and do som physical work or exercise.

I gave up sex after I realised I couldn't become professional and make a living out of it....

Ziggy_Zugzwang

I never joke on chess.com...

Rooky1951

If you like it, do it ! If not, don't do it. It's that simple

DreamscapeHorizons

I hope that helps, good luck.

Reading this was a waste of time.

Oh, so hobbies just are a waste of time? Christ, can people not do things purely for fun anymore? It always has to be for profit or for talent? Your life must be awfully bland if you never waste time or do things just because you enjoy them.

Wait: Just realized this is from 2014. Nevermind, continue along.

Benjanader

Honestly, life is just a waste of time.
