Chess study helps develop cognitive skills and in some ways makes you smarter. On the other hand, reading internet chess forums makes you dumber.

No. I am a person, not some kind of chess.
No. If chess were just for smart people, chess.com would have far less than its almost 20 million members, and I might not even be here.
I think people who play chess are above average on intelligence. But after reading some of these forms maybe not.

The better question is whether your definition of smart has anything to do with being smart. Is a chess grandmaster with an Iq of 180 that makes consistently poor life decisions smart? I certainly would say no.
