Chess is for smart people. Chess is for average people. Chess is for dumb people too. happy.png

We are the idiots of the world...

Chess players are mostly idiots.

I wouldn't so much say smart as I would say not stupid. I think it's much more important not to be an idiot than to be a genius, until you get to a level far above mine or any of the people likely to post here.

Yeah, pretty much this.

Mark_Zambelli

IQ does not define your intelligent by the way. It is just a measurement and a theory.

And theory is always tentative, open to refutation

Your grammar is open to refutation.

True, though.

re. another comment: true, this is the internet; but these are chess players, whom one might hope would have somewhat above-average IQs. Mind you, average is pretty dull.

As is the average chess player.

Chess study helps develop cognitive skills and in some ways makes you smarter. On the other hand, reading internet chess forums makes you dumber.

As does the entire internet.

That's the same as the number of squares on a chessboard. Are you some kind of... chess... guy?

No. I am a person, not some kind of chess.

oregonpatzer

No.  If chess were just for smart people, chess.com would have far less than its almost 20 million members, and I might not even be here.

Forkedupagain

I think people who play chess are above average on intelligence. But after reading some of these forms maybe not.

The better question is whether your definition of smart has anything to do with being smart. Is a chess grandmaster with an Iq of 180 that makes consistently poor life decisions smart? I certainly would say no.

Life is choice and results. You are smart if you make smart choices.

Life is suffering.  You can be at the top of the world, then get hit by a drunk driver 2 seconds later.

That doesn't sound like suffering. That sounds like death. I think not living for a lifetime is worse than death.
