Is chess only fun when you win?

Yes it's only about winning. I loose a lot, so as the looser I am I can tell you that loosing is not fun. It's not interesting...It's just physical and emotional pain.

Magnus seems to think so.

"It's a very beautiful feeling when you don't see a big difference between winning or losing, just enjoying the pleasure of playing chess."

Happy to lose with a good game but when I have a losing streak I hate everyone, including myself 😬😬😬🤣It's a good game if we chat through the game a little, usually within the first few minutes games turn from points driven to fun by how my opponent interacts.

BlunderUck

Yes.  Losing can cause heart attacks.  No bull!

YellowVenom

Yes, it is, and even then it's not always fun when you win. It's infinitely better than the soul-destroying pain when you lose, though.

watch yer blood pressure!!!

Chess is still fun when I lose.

Less fun, but it's still there.

Perhaps.

Yes it is, when I lose I don't have fun, so I try to get good so I can actually have fun

I also love this vague argument about the 'beauty' and 'pleasure' of chess. This game is not an art, there is no beauty to it in any way. Chess is nothing more than a cold, logical, robotic game where he/she who memorises the most positions will invariably win. There are so many other games in the world that aren't as one-dimensional as chess.

I loved playing baseball. Winning was icing on the cake, but I just loved the game and playing was pure fun, win or lose.
Chess, for me, is not like that. Winning is fun. Playing well and losing is acceptable. Losing is no fun....period.

Wits-end

I don’t enjoy every game, but more often than not or I wouldn’t play. The game has a similarity with music performance with me, I always know I could have, should have done better. This note… not quite right. That phrase… not smoothly timed just perfectly. If I was driven only a fraction of my early music years in this game, I’d be a whole better.

Some of my favorite games have been games where I've drawn from what feels like a worse position, but of course winning is nice, although some wins aren't even fun

Soldado89

Although winning produces a wonderful high, all the true lessons come when you lose.

It depends

If you seek self approval that you are good at playing that game a win even if it is easily done is fun

But, if you  just want to enjoy playing chess a win or lose with even match is the best feeling. Even better when you win a game.

Why find anything beautiful?

I definitely enjoy chess more when winning, or when the game is really close i also enjoy it.

i do not enjoy getting owned badly

Great positions and finding rare tactics is far more satisfying than the 'win' button being pushed.
