I've been playing chess for decades and my brain is all spongy and rotten. You have been warned!
Is Chess Really Good for Your Brain?

I maintain that it's Comedy that's good for your brain.
The late comedian Mitch Hedberg said that once, in a club, he was told "Sir, move away from the door. You're blocking the Fire Exit." Hedberg's perfectly well-reasoned response: "How could I be Blocking the Fire Exit? If you have legs ........... and you are flammable ........... you are NEVER Blocking a Fire Exit."

Well, conceivably, if your large head were quite extremely large and extremely heavy, and your whole body tipped over while you were screaming "Fire!" and trying to get out the door, you might pose a certain barrier to the orderly evacuation of a building.
If only you could have discussed this with Mitch Hedberg ..... ah, what long, fascinating conversations might have ensued ...... .....

Not sure I'd be likely to take Mitch Hedberg's recommendations for what's good for your brain...
Or actually, I think I did for a while back there (that may be the problem).

I just finished reading an article that states eating whilst playing chess calm's your heart rate down and nourishes many new regions of your brain without even knowing.
So, yes!

Ironically, I read an article which stated that reading that article you read actually causes mental dysfunction.
So, no.

I just read the same article again, different one.
?

I read an article that said that the reason most people read comments in forums on chess sites is that they already know lots of stuff, so sometimes their lives can get boring, so they enjoy seeking out and discovering new sources of "bafflement." (I think the article was entitled: "Bafflement-Seeking: Is It for You?")
