I only know him, ie his content, cursory wise, so my comment will reflect this. Did he promise to make great content, can't he have a little fun and do videos that he enjoys, and who said that isn't great content btw! I would rather he enjoy making the videos and keeps making them, than him making great content, very educational, that will continue to produce high level players for eternity, that he doesn't enjoy producing.

Chess isn't just about winning, improving, being glorified and put on a pedestal. Actually chess in't about those things at all, and I really pity the fools who don't get that. [Disclaimer: my lawyer wants me to stress that if you can play chess or even read the above comment, then you can't be a fool. End of disclaimer]

Levy is awesome- love Gotham- helped me understand the game much better.

It was never about quality... most popular YouTube channels are about entertaining children, not quality.

Indeed. Kinda sad, but "educational" channels like Chess Dojo (16k) or Perpetual Chess (6k) have significantly less subs... So I guess it's understandable to focus on entertainment to please a large audience.

He makes videos that get attention, he mentioned it. It's a business decision. Personally not a fan of guess the elo at all, it's really dumb to me tbh. Someone playing their best vs their worst game makes this boring. Educational content sadly doesn't get as many views as "magnus did WHAT?" etc "Crazy game between x and y!"

Nennerb

He's more of an entertainer than an educator-- when he makes videos about openings and covering games, I don't think his priority is to help his audience understand chess; his goal is to get them views. I still enjoy watching his content, however. All the power to him. I think he's done a great job entertaining his audience through his dynamic personality and such. You can still learn a great deal from his videos, but I think you'll get the most out of his videos when you acknowledge that what you're watching is entertainment, not teaching.

I just like him a bit better now...

and to keep on the thread, he's not an educator... you can learn a thing or 2 from his vids, much like almost any other chess video, but def not an educator

I think GothamChess is a really good channel, and the fact that it's super-popular doesn't make it any less (or more) so. If everyone is saying "It's the best channel and nothing else comes close", then I guess it's overrated (I tend to watch Andras Toth more than the other channels), but much of it is very good content. The idea that he's "def not an educator" is frankly preposterous. I'm sure there are videos on the channel that are not educational, but the videos where he plays a game and explains all the moves are super-useful.

I'm not American, but I know enough New Yorkers to know that it's easy for them to offend people with their sense of humor if you're not used to it. (I remember an incident involving Jesse Eisenberg a few years ago.) I think the correct approach is just to assume goodwill on the other's part, and if you really can't stand it then watch alternative content and forget about Gotham.

I started watching him when I was rated 600, now I gained 600 more, granted it used to be 700 but I previously lost a lot of rating

ren97ren

700 more elo

He has a lot of good content. It's my misfortune that his most popular bit (guess the elo) is the thing I like least about his show. But he has to chase the subs.
